Enjoying FP4+

FP-4 is one of those films that seems to look good in any developer. I've gotten great results with it in D-76 1+1, Rodinal 1+50, and PMK. PMK is my favorite developer for FP-4 (and HP-5), but it looks great in every developer I have used.

Rodinal 1+50 is my go to developer for medium format. How does the grain compare with Ilfosol 3 when using it with FP4 35mm?

FP4+ is one my favourite film as well! Here is a shot souped in D76 1:1. BTW great work from all contributors to this thread!

FP4+ is a classic film, i have used it on and off for 40 years. Don't remember if it was FP4 or FP3 back then.
I have found the best tonality when i use Harveys 777. Back in the early days i used a lot of Neofin Blue.

Great work everyone.

I just started shooting film again, after 14 years of digital. FP4 is a film I really wanted to try, and I like what I see:

Great tones, good sharpness, and a nice old-school moderate grain.

Great shots in this thread.

It is my 100ASA film (for 400ASA I use HP5 Plus).

Here are some examples:

Mamiya C220 + 65mm:

I don't know. I've never used Ilfosol 3. I know that Rodinal with FP-4 is a little grainier than FP-4 in D-76 or PMK, but it is not bad looking in medium format. I haven't used FP-4 in 35mm.

Thanks Chris. I use Rodinal exclusively for MF but have been scared off it for 35mm due to more grain than other developers (or at least reports there of). Might try it one day.

Been souping FP4 in Rodinal, 1:50. Absolutely love that combination. I have used it in Ilfosol 3 and it is really very good, but the tonality in Rodinal is way more my speed. It's fine-grained enough that I actually prefer the FP4+ texture in Rodinal.

Sold. I will definitely be giving that a go with my next roll of FP4. Thanks

Johnmcd, I use 2 developers: HC110 and Rodinal. These are very diferent, but I like both!

De_corday, great shot!

Strangely enough, I was looking for something and found a little (24 pages with cover) booklet introducing FP4 to replace FP3 and at the back of the book is the printers ref: C&S 100m C68. I guess that means 1968 it was introduced and the booklet printed and 100,000 copies were printed. A pity I never picked up the intro to FP4+...

Anyway, I've been using it and Fomapan200 for years; trouble is, every now and then, find myself asking for FP3 in shops.

Regards, David

I haven't used Rodinal for FP-4 in 35mm, but I have used it for several other 35mm films with great results. I like it a lot for Tei-X, which is a grainier film than FP-4 no matter what developer you use.

Tri-X 35mm in Rodinal 1+50

Thanks for all this, folks. Just bought my first ever roll of FP4+ (in 120), planning on shooting this weekend. Will probably soup it in Adonal 1+50 as that's what I've been using recently. Love the results posted here with Xtol and D76 though... :)

This arrived today from B&H.

Thirty rolls of 120 Ilford FP4+.

These will go through my three Plaubel Makiflexes.

Never liked how white people look with the ilford films (especially the deltas, but hp5 and fp4 are very similar), lips disappear and look very dull on the subjects due to the red-sensitivity in the films imo.

People with dark complexion look much better.
