Enlarging with a Jupiter 8, or jury-rigging a darkroom

This was just a temporary setup to try some enlargements and get the hang of the darkroom. :) I got a proper enlarging lens (a EL-Nikkor 50/2.8) on eBay, it's already on the way, and also a simple easel (with four fixed sizes) and a grain focuser, I expect to get more consistent results with these. The biggest problem with the Jupiter was focusing and centering, I left the lens at f/5.6 to get good sharpness, but the image was sometimes a little too dim for focusing and specially centering with the enlarger's protective filter (not to mention without an easel...). Changing to f/2 and changing back was out of the question, as the Jupiter does not have click stops.

I always wondered, where this "taking lenses are destroyed on enlargers because of heat" comes from.
My experience with enlargers is limited to only a few types, but none of these heated up the lens noticeable.
After all, the light that is supposed to heat up the lens must pass the negative before. And the negative absorbs much more light than the lens...
Taking lenses are also used in various temperature conditions - from snowy landscapes back to room temperature and half a year later baken in the car to be cooled down by the AC in the house.

Myth or reality - has anybody personally destroyed a taking lens on an enlarger because of heat?
