Well, I just took delivery of my refurbished Epson 1400 yesterday--an incredible $179! I've got it hooked up and installed and will be doing my first prints later today. My plan is to use the stock inks to print an upcoming show, then replace them with the MIS U-14 black and white inkset and use the 1400 as a dedicated B&W printer, which seems to be its forte for many digital photographers.

Meanwhile, a couple of questions. Am I supposed to leave the printer on 24/7 with plain letter sized paper loaded? Will it cycle now and then to keep the head clean? It is highly unlikely that I will ever use it every day.

I'd like to go out to Best Buy this afternoon and pick up a few smaller paper sizes (I bought some Epson 13x19" glossy and matte papers with the printer) for testing. Which readily available inkjet photo papers work well with the Epson?

Thanks all!

I don't leave my printer on when I'm not using it. No problems so far! For glossy paper, I can highly recommend the kirkland glossy. Apart from it being glossy (which I don't like very much) its great!

Stick with Epson papers. Other brands will require recalibration and even then the results can vary. The 1400's permanency ratings are somewhere around 100 years with Epson Premium Glossy. Yes, Glossy. Most of the other printers only have archival longevity with Matte papers. Check your results with matte papers. The 1400 is "optimized" for glossy. You may or may not like the results with matte. I've got one and love it. Most trouble-free Epson I've had.

Bear in mind that I only print with custom ICCs using black and white inksets. I have no experience with the color epson inksets.
