Epson 3800 magenta tint on b&w?

Trying to print some black and white photos using my Epson 3800. I've got it set up for Advanced Black and White and neutral tone but for some reason I'm getting a magenta cast and it seems to be using up my magenta ink.

Any ideas? I've tried using both Lightroom and Photoshop (they seem to handle printing differently) and I've got the printer manages color box checked.

The photos are converted black and whites but I figure this shouldn't matter if printer is managing color and it's using the Advanced Black and White print setting?

Haven't printed in awhile and I forget all the hocus pocus required to get things to do what I want.

The advanced BW mode only gives true black and white with Epson papers. Are you using another paper brand?

Make sure, that photoshop or lightroom are EXCLUDED from colour management. The printer has to manage colour, if you want to use advanced b&w. It is not true that you need Epson paper. Inside advanced b&w you also have a section for fine tuning the "warmth" of your b&w. If you want pure neutral effect, set everything to zero.

Well, I'm using Ilford gallerie but I've printed on this paper for years and not had this issue. As I said I've got it set for printer manages color.

My understanding was that the advanced black and white ONLY uses the photo black the light black and the very light black so I'm not sure where a tint would even be possible but it is definitely draining my magenta cartridge as I just had to replace.

I think the issue might have something to do with converting to black and white using DXO filmpack in Lightroom and then trying to print.

Didn't have this issue when I used to scan black and white film and print via Photoshop on same printer. But I haven't been printing much and it's always been a bit of a black art to me to get it to work properly so I'm thinking maybe there's a box I'm not checking or something.

The Epson BW mode does use the colors, even with a neutral print (where you haven't set it to give a tone). Converting in DXO isn't the problem. Its your settings, but I can't say which without seeing what you're doing.

Yes, you definitely use up colour carts even in advanced B&W mode. I suggest to check again all the settings, also check the level of ink in all carts, and if all looks correct, then re-install your photo editing program you are using, as most likely, it is continuing to manage the colours.

Printing is infuriating.

Once the same happened to me with my 3000
That was after cleaning the print head and obtaining a good test print
In desperation I cleaned the print head again.
And bingo the problem disappeared.

This happened recently with my 3880. I manage colors from lightroom/photoshop, using the corresponding ICC profile for the paper I use (Canson Baryta). Two head cleaning cycles cured the problem (painfully, as ink levels suffer each time)

Will try a cleaning cycle or two.

I think that's how I've solved this in past, now that I think of it.

Great printer but if you don't use it much, always need to waste some ink on cleaning cycles to get working right it seems.

Therein is your problem. You DO NOT want the printer to manage colors as it will double profile. You want Photoshop or Lightroom to manage colors and have the printer print what the image editor sends it with no further adjustment or management.
