epson 7800 black inks?

I have just purchased an epson 7800 printer and am slowly getting to know it, and I wondered if anyone here knows if a you can change straight from photo black to matt black ink without doing the ink change process, and b, what happens if you do this? perhaps a silly question, but I would have thought the slight difference in the inks would make little difference when mixed.

any other tips on useing this printer would be much appreciated.

Unfortunately, if you care enough about the final print, the difference between matte and glossy black inks will make a difference, and you'll simply need to bite the bullet and purge whatever previous ink remains in the lines when you switch carts. A not-insignificant waste of ink, but it beats wasting large sheets of paper discovering undesired "results" of mixed inks.

yes I know what you mean about quality, what I was wondering is, if you can just take the photo black out and put the matt in, then maybe do a few experimental pieces until the matt black takes up fully, just as a means of trying to avoid the volume of ink being flushed in the change over process. cheers

You could do that if you like; the problem is that there's no way of knowing precisely when the "switchover" between inks occurs during a purge. But, for the sake of just messing around a bit, why not?

do you have one of these printers ? if you do any tips on saving inks, from what ive read they just love pumping ink to the maintenance tank 🙂

I have a 7600 and beleive the 7800 is similar. The printer will automatically purge the lines when you switch inks - costing somewhere close to $100 in waste .

There is a way to trick the printer into switching without the purge by going into the service menu and following a specific protocol of raising the ink door, changing inks, entering the service code, etc . This I'd called the "South African" method of switching. Google it for details and a similar technique for the 7800.
