--- edit: the camera is sold! ---

Hi,

sadly, financial reasons are forcing me to sell the beloved Epson R-D1. Sad for two reasons, one, I shall miss the camera (I'm sure you'll all understand why!) - it's been a completely reliable pal for quite a while.

And also, it means moving away from RF photography and back to the more cerebral (for me) world of the SLR. So it will be a farewell to all my friends here on RFF (that's if anyone wants to buy it ;) ). This is the friendliest forum I've ever found, and I've had many fun and helpful conversations here with you all. I think I'll miss that more than the camera :(

The camera's in the classifieds - if you know someone looking for one, let them know.

Also coming up for sale will be some lenses. I'll advertise them when the camera's sold, I think. There'll be a Canon 50/1.2 (fabulous copy!), an '85 tabbed Summicron 50/2, a couple of CV 28's and a Rokkor 40/2. Oh, and the wonderful CV UW Heliar 12mm 5.6. If you're interested in any of these, please send a message.

thanks
Phil

Good luck Phil. Funnily enough, same happened to my R-D1 when the taxman cameth.

Phil was fantastically helpful to me, sending me a new disk for PS Elements, and I would presume he's an excellent man to do business with.

Sorry to hear of your problems. I wish you well.

I also wish you to stay in touch here. Nobody I can think of here is going to ban you just because you aren't using an rf as your main camera. You may feel uncomfortable posing non-rf photos, but your knowledge and comments should always be welcome.

If only we could all be professional street photographers huh? That would mean we would need rangefinders all the time, and would have no reason to sell them...

I love my r-d1 thats for sure, must be hard!

The only SLR I really love at this point is my om2n, but they certainly are easier to get along with sometimes.

Good luck to you

Gavin

Hi, thanks for the messages.

The clincher for me was needing a tilt-shift lens for some architecture - can't do that with an RF camera (the tilt-shift that is)!

Also, for commercial work, I really feel the need for more pixels. So I've settled on the 5D as my main camera. It's a compromise - personally I prefer the look of the files I get with the R-D1, but in the real world, how many clients would be able to see the difference? They just go by the file size!

Phil, I feel for you...mine is up for sale here too but I almost hope nobody is interested...that way i get to keep it guilt free (almost).

Good luck with the 5D.

Phil, sorry you have to sell your R-D1, but I don't think that actual ownership of an RF camera is a prerequisite for being a forum member, so stick around!

Phil, I'm really sorry that you need to do this. I had poor health make me decide to sell my RD-1 twice and both times I just couldn't bring myself to do it and backed out. The same health issues led me to a Pentax K10D for the stabilization. It's a great camera but it just doesn't get my heart started and I still use the RD-1 most.

Stick around, you never get over RF talk.

I'm looking to buy a used RD-1 in the US if anyone is interested in selling. I'm guessing shipping from London and conversions being what they are, this would be cost prohibitive for this one. I may be in the UK in August though, so will check if this is still available when I go.

Sorry finances force sale ... know how that goes for sure.

Phil,

Sorry to hear the news. There's no problem sticking around on RFF as there is an evil SLR forum now :) .

If you want to borrow an R-D1 just pm me.

Good luck with whatever you end up doing.

Phil,
Sorry you are having to part with your R-D1, but that's no reason to deprive forum members of your 2 years + experience of the camera. ;)

Phil,
Keep the R-D1 and correct the verticals in Photoshop! ;)

Or buy a secondhand 5 x 4, with better movements than a Canon PC lens and more than enough film type pixels for less than half the lens price these days. :D

I was offered a Linhoff Master Technica (I have a MK IV), which are over £2K new, a few weeks back for less than £400.

Ha Jim! I'll probably end up keeping the R-D1 simply because I haven't had any real offers yet :)

I'll have to redo the ad and make it look pretty ;)

I've used a 5x4 for many years, and sort of love it and hate it. And when I'm successful and when it actually means something to be able to claim against tax, I'll get a 6x7 type view camera with a digital back - but that's about $50,000 away at the moment!

Actually, I really like the TS lenses - it's just a different way of working. If your gonna use a tripod, might as well make as much use of it as possible. I ended up swapping the Elmarit for it, and really, that was getting to be my least-used lens. In fact, I think in past year, I only used it for IR. I've always found wide-angles on the R-D1 a bit frustrating as I never felt I had the control over the composition. I don't get that with the slightly longer lenses. But when I do want the precise framing (OK I know the 5D isn't really 100%) the TS is great. And I get 13 M pixels, rather than around 5 M that I'd get correcting the R-D1 files.

So, I may well be here for a bit longer, though without the wide angles, I'm afraid. The last lens to go will be the 50mm Summicron. Now that's a lens and a half :D

In 1988 Leitz made a tilt shift "R" lens the PC -Super-Angulon-R 28mm f/2.8. A Novaflex R to M mount for $229 at B&H will get you up and running.

I have used a friends RD-1 with my "First Version" 1959-1961 Summilux 50mm f/1.4 and I would say the files stand up very good when compared to my 16.4 mp Canon 1Ds Mark II DSLR an "L" prime lens.

I'd perhaps even consider a swap. Your RD-1 and all those M mount lenses for my Canon 1Ds Mark II. I was trying to turn pro and that's why I got my new 1Ds Mark II last August. But lately I realize I'm just interested in photography as a Hobby and I could part with it since I have 4 Canon DSLR's.
Yes I really do like the RD-1 that much!

Actually you can do Tilt-shift with a range finder camera.

See this thread on LUF.
