Epson R-d1(s) used or new no warranty?

Yanidel, I know... 40 deserves a nice treat! the good thing for you is that in 5 you will have far better options than we have these days 🙂 If you want to part from the L1 let me know ok? I have an L1 body but sold the lens... I think is a better deal to buy the whole kit!

Regards,
R
For the moment, I'll keep the L1 😉 This is my backup and who knows ... If not, I'll let you know. Looks like you are in Monterrey, I studied there for a year back in 98 at the Tech ... muy buena pachenga !! 😎😀

I keep wondering about the RD1. Have been thinking too long really. Is it still worth getting one now taking into consideration it's age, digital advances, 6MP sensor etc.
As I mentioned in another thread here i had the chance to buy an M8 last week but after handling it I just didn't care for it. Now I've been looking around the threads and have started (yet again) to look at the RD1. Just took a look at Matsuiyastore and the price is good.
I currently have a D80, G7, F30 in my digital armoury. BTW would the lenses on my Minolta CLE be suitable for the RD1? I have the 40mm Rokkor and CV 25/4 P.

To each his own. I just can't see paying $2,000 for an obsolete camera. While I understand that there are many RF users who desperately want to abandon film but not their lenses and can't afford an M8, it just seems it has created a cult camera that is now way over-priced.

The RD1 captures fine images, but old technology is a bad investment over time. YMMV

It's a cult camera, no doubt. But it does create beautiful images and it's a joy to shoot with the R-D1.

It's expensive given the technology available today but, if you like the camera, you like the camera. I see no downside to that.

Before I even heard of the R-D1 I was considering purchase of an M8. Still am. But, given the issues with that camera, and the price tag, I can't justify. When compared to the R-D1, the M8 looks like the bad buy, IMHO. That said, I covet one.

Well, I bought a used one for about $1680. Got it this week, it is in great shape. Before I bought it I called Epson and they told me that they will stock parts for 6 more years. Then I called Steve's Camera Repair. He said as long as he can get parts he will repair. He said he usually can get parts for about five years longer after the manufacturer stops supporting the unit. So that is 11 years of support for a fine camera! He charges $250 for CLA which he said he should be able to offer "forever". As most of you know Steve is a straight shooter. So maybe by 2019 I'll trade up. Unless GAS gets me which of course it will.

I agree with Mobilexile. I wanted to buy the M8, I could afford it but was not sure I would like rangefinders, so I bought the RD1. Now I like that camera so much that there is no real reason to justify changing for a M8. Picture quality and new technology are not my main purchasing requirements. Yet, I would love to have a bigger LCD and more reactive interface, this is to me the biggest obsolete thing in the RD1.
For me, the RD1 is not an investment. I don't care if suddenly its value is divided by two, it is just a pleasure to shoot with.
Now if a RD2 would come around ...

Originally I wasn't thrilled with the LCD and interface. But I quickly came to love it. The fact that it's a little behind technologically actually makes it more attractive to me. Today's DSLRs offer so many features that they actually take you away from the real reason you buy a camera -- to make beautiful pictures. Ever look at the D3? It's like sitting in the cockpit of a 777.

I agree, let me clarify. What I don't like most of all is the slow responsiveness of the interface and some of the strange buttons set up when zooming. Yet overall, the jod dial integration and menus are great. Basic and simple but everything you need to take pictures.
As for theD does not have enough resolution to check sharpness and impossible to use in bright light. A bit bigger would have been perfect.
But well, these are minor issues.

I understand and agree.

In my case the clunkiness of the interface is a chimping deterrent. It makes me think about the next shot rather than dwell on the last. For some reason I can't stop myself so the camera does it for me. That and the Luigi case. The extra step of taking the patch off also cuts back on my tendency to chimp.

I fully admit to being weak in the chimp department. I don't have the self control of most shooters.

Well, one of the good thing about RFF is that I get to learn new words. "Chimp" ! I like it.
Normally I have the 3 sec setting on. I just look if framing was ok due to the unprecises framelines and that I use the 21mm without finder.
The interface I use when reviewing pictures on a trip and erasing the bad ones. Here more responsiveness would be great.
I also have a half case and sometimes I turn the LCD inside, especially when low on battery. Yet the automatism to check the framing stays ... weird sensation 😱

pixels, pixels, pixels.

i currently have a d2x and the "very old fashioned" d2h.
Guess what : sometimes i still prefer the old d2h. Very clean pictures and always sharp.
It has only 4 mpx instead of the 12 from the d2x.
When i want to make large print's : yes the d2x is better. Bur for normal photography 6 or even 4 mpx is more than enough.

the rd1-s which i recently "bought" is back to epson for adjustment. I have only worked a few day's with it. But o boy, it's a very nice tool to work with.
I give's you the feeling making pictures again !!
can't wait to get it back

Yes, the first time I heard 'chimping' I fell out of my chair laughing. It's such a great term. Go to a tourit site where people take lots of pictures and just watch sometime. You'll be in stitches.

I will. just looked up the definition in wikipedia :

Chimping is a term used in digital photography (especially when using a digital single-lens reflex camera) to describe the habit of checking every photo on the on-camera display (LCD) immediately after capture.
Experienced photographers often use the term in a derogatory sense to describe the actions of wannabe photographers (often called newbies).[1]
Usage behaviour varies depending on context and the person using it, but common uses include:
  • When a photographer’s sounds and actions of reviewing frames on-scene appear similar to the actions of an excited primate (Oooh! Oooh! Aaah!)
  • When the photographer is completely absorbed in the act of analysing, admiring or proudly showing a photo off to others
Never realized, it is indeed perfectly right!

This is an point of view I struggle to understand.

What makes a camera 'obsolete'? It either captures 'fine images' or it doesn't.

The R-D1 has always taken fine images - strangely enough the appearance of 10+ mp cameras does not alter this. If you need more mp's, by all means go for it but this hardly affects the R-D1's performance.

I have a 20D as well. Is that obsolete too? Funny it still takes tack sharp sports shots at 5 fps that it always did. Oh, but it's only 8 mp.

I put my favourite lens on the R-D1, I hide the screen away and shoot all day. That night I sit in front of my computer and discover some magic...

Cheers - John

I completely agree with johnmcd.

I have my R-D1s and I found my raw files even at iso 1600 far more appealing than the ones I get from my D80. I also have the screen flipped, I never chimp, and with its Luigi's half case looks to me like a wonderful piece of analogue equipment with digital guts. Saying it is obsolete Just because there are other cameras with more MP or extra features is like saying photography was absurd until AF, VR or file buffering were invented.

It is nice to hear that will be supported for a few more years and as long as our computers allow us to download the files, its expiration date is fortunately far away 🙂
