Epson RD-1 vs Rd-1s

Is there any difference between the two other than firmware download?

No basically -------- or no Positive differences . Apparently, with the R-D1S you can`t adjust the rangefinder by removing the hotshoe and twiddling a screw, it`s fixed and the camera has to be taken apart to adjust it . and that some RAW converters may not work with the R-D1S because there is a different Tag in the EXIF Data whereas a firmware upgraded R-D1 still says R-D1..
This to me says "Grab an R-D1 if you can" ..

The R-D1s is a positive improvement in many ways. It is the SAME camera with improved software. It is the one you want. If you have/get an R-D1 it is simple to go to the Epson website, find the download to upgrade the R-D1 to the -s, copy to a SD card which goes into the camera. Follow directions on uploading to the camera's internal software and you're done.

AFAICT they both have exactly the same RF mechanism, but I haven't taken my R-D1s apart to check.

Sorry to repeat but it is nor true, at least with my copies.
With the R-D1s, the screw dedicated to RF vertical alignment has not the same orientation and is smaller than that of the R-D1.
Also, contrary to the R-D1, this screw is inactive with the R-D1s so that i cannot adjust vertical alignment myself any more.
As far as my bodies are concerned, the R-D1 and R-D1s are then different cameras from this standpoint.

You probably are right re the adjustments. I haven't had to do this myself - yet. However the software improvements are significant and worthwhile. So, yes, if you can find an 'original' R-D1 and 'convert' to the -s then go for it. Best of both worlds then.

Interesting. That's the first I've heard of it. I wonder if you got a strange one. When/if my RF goes out of alignment I'll let you know what mine is like...
