The RD1s is now available on Ebay from Japan for approximately $2500 from Matsuiya Store. I 've bought from them before, and they're first rate, although not a discount shop. Unfortunately, all warranty service is through Epson Japan and cameras need to be shipped back to the store for any service. Thought people would be interested.

What kind of price difference do you typically see between the Japan price and the HK grey market. Have you had servicing problems with your grey market products?

Interesting. Now all we need is for some R-D 1 owner to buy one and make a direct comparison, so we can see whether there are any mechanical differences or strictly firmware.

My gut feeling is that the prices are generally cheaper.
Remember someother HK member posted a price of $18,000 HKD for the RD-1 maybe half a year ago, that's around $2,320 USD (exchange rate is fixed between 7.75~7.78:1)
In terms of service problem, I honestly do not know, but you would take the camera back to the shop instead of sending it back to japan I guess.
Anyone brough a RD-1 from HK?

JLW,
Maybe some US members can do this later on?

I am living in HK and bought an "official" (warranteed) RD-1 (not "S") about a month ago and after a small bit of haggling got it for HK$14,500 which is a pretty good deal since other places were selling it for HK$15,500 or thereabouts.
I knew the "S" was coming out and they said they were projecting a price of about HK$17,000 so I went ahead and bought the older version seeing the main difference, I believe, was just the firmware aspects.

I wouldn't buy there from outside japan - if one may have a warranty issue later he might face troubles.
I have seen german e-shops taking pre-commands for 1900 EUR, that's roughly $2400 - VAT 16% included. Robert White UK sells it for £1192 ($2180) without VAT - might be interesting for buyers outside the EU.
I couldn't wait and had bought a R-D1 for £1050 ($1926) - but it went back to Epson Switzerland after a few days - rangefinder alignment...
I would like to know if the firmware update and the new paint finish are really the only difference between the two models. I hope at least the the quality control is better now.
