Hi _ Sorry to hear of your problems. Can you elaborate about how to check if the sensor is tilted? And, has Epson responded by trying to rep[air or replace your unit? Thanks...Peter

Put the time on B position, use a fixable cable release, and keep the shutter open. You'll se by the eye if there's a tilt. Mine is approximatel 0.6 degree, clockwise - which is much and very clearly noticeable seen from the front.
Shooting with accurate horizontal levelling is a hit and miss thing, as you can not rely neither on framelines nor on a bubble level.

Have told it to Robert White six weeks ago, wich offered to clear it with Epson UK, but have not got any answer so far.

To be honest, knowing what would come on me, I wouldn't have bought that camera. Epson's QC is just a **** worth.

I've been putting off getting an R-D1 locally at retail $3k or imported but when I found this thread I rushed over to the Epson site to see that they still have refurbs in stock at $1550. Thanks to the coupon I saved another 10% on the whole order and so now I'm anxiously awaiting delivery!!

Didier- Again, sounds like you've got a lemon, a drag for sure. One thought is that you called yours a "demo". That usually means a camera that's been a floor model or on loan to salespeople and they can get knocked around. "Refurbished" implies the factory fixed a problem back to specs. Maybe that'll increase the chance that these refurbished cameras work as they should, just hoping anyway.....Peter

Wow, Deed, this is a real surprise to me - I had a couple of dodgy bodies with tilted frames, but I always assumed (dangerous!) that it was the V/F that was out - it never occured to me that they could screw up on putting in the sensor 🙁

sorry to hear that - I would think that would be a pig to fix - I hope RW get you another. Keep nagging them - it's really worth the effort if you can get a good one. I was one of the early buyers, and sent three back before I was satisfied. But that said, since then, touch wood, I've never had a problem in 20 months.

With a decent QC they probably would have sold twice the cameras, and an RD-1s at about £1500 would be still an extremely attractive option.
However being both QC and support well below par, I think the M8 is actually better value for money despite costing twice as much.

Well, I may have spoken too soon on the perfection of my refurb. Looks like the vertical RF is out of alignment RRRGHHH!

If it is ony the vertical alignement the problem you can fix it yourself in 5 mins, there is a thread explaining how:

If that is the only problem fix it yourself, DON'T send it back to Epson, they don't usually repair but replace them, and God knows what they will send you next time.

Yes I know sounds ridicolous but Epson service on the RD-1 really is that bad.

Yes, Epson managed to screw up even the sensor alignment! Another RFF fellow had the same problem, too (scroll down this thread).

I have mailed Jon of RW today, and knowing their fine service I'm sure they'll make pressure on Epson UK again. All I can hope is, if they replace it, that I don't get another lemon. I would ask them to check alignments of sensor, frame lines and focusing accuracy (close and infinity) before delivery.

BTW I had made this graphics to illustrate my problem to Jon. The disalignement is estimated by eye, but corresponds quite well to my sensor. The tilt is more than 0.5° degrees. Looks like nothing but this is clearly visible in images made with bubble level.

PS- what i forgot: if the framelines are tilted the other way round, you'll have even more troubles!

Thanks Francesco. I read the link. I ordered a megaperl magnifier and this should help me see the misalignment better. I may give it a shot or get a refund and stick with my Canon stuff. Not sure yet.

can you get a refund on the refurbished RD-1? I thought epson would not do this...Peter

Who in the UK can setup the rangefinder of these cameras then? - If RW`s technicians did it, I`d be far happier than having to send it back to Epson (I have slight rear focussing issues) and would pay rather than send it to Epson under warranty!.

First I want to thank mountinrivera for the discount code. I had placed an order over the weekend without it, and called today and Epson was nice enough to apply the discount!

Now, another question-suggestion. Given how many of these cameras need adjustment, and that this can be a more than once issue, I wonder who might be available to do it well, as Epson seems not to be. I would suppose that camera repair shops that deal with rangefinders would be one option, and maybe some enterprising sole who has mastered the RD-1 adjustments might want to have some business! These kind of mechanical repairs are not my strength, (understatement) though the vertical adjust might be something I'd try, or get my wife to, as she's great at these things......Peter

Peter: Search the forums here. For this price, I think sending it off to a competent technician is a good investment. I seem to recall DAG (Don Goldberg) will work on the R-D1, but that could be a senior-moment recollection.
