Well, yesterday I made my biweekly round of the Camera shops/dealers.
(Currently in Japan it is "Goldenweek" a annual 10 or so days holiday
)
And the dealer where I picked up my RD-1 had about 4-5 Secondhand bodies
BUT the curious thing was that he was offering them with transferrable warranties!
These RD-1 are sourced directly from Epson. So the conclusion that we came to was that these are probably bodies that were returned to Epson for having wonky frames
dead pixels or other defects, repaired at Epsons leasure (as production of new RD-1s are still ongoing it seems) and are now beginning to resurface as Factory refurbished seconds. Now you may be thinking great a cheaper source.........Sorry
I don't know whether its because of the warranties or Epson not wanting to lower the price but basically I can buy new bodies for 280,000yen and yet these Factory refurbished are commanding 260,000yen, having said that most shops are trying to sell the bodies for 310,000+yen, so in that respect I suppose it is a reasonable difference.
Anyway I suppose this half explains what is happening to some of the cameras that have been returned.
Mike.

I might prefer a refurb to new... The refurbished unit would have a more thorough QA, certainly each one would have individual inspection including cleaning, and less chance of remaining defects. I suppose all the original bits and pieces such as cables and software would be included too, which is sometimes not the case with refurb computers.

If you see S/N 001880 give it a waive for me; I managed to take some ok pictures with it despite its focus problem. I am happy with the replacement, though.

These might also be press pool/review/trade show demo cameras in addition to (or maybe instead of) user returns.
I wonder if they are assigning new serial numbers when they recirculate them...?

OK went back today the numbers were 1970s, 2960s, 3600s and a 2170s so a pritty wide spread......but could still be original demo's or loaners.... although all the other shops have still got their loaners....
Apparently hes already gone through over 3 dozen....So they seem to sell quite well.
