I'm not having much luck with my new scanners. My Nikon goes back tomorrow and the Epsons lower glass is dirty with white specks. The instruction manual says not to open the scanner. Is my only choice to send it back to Epson?

I did a search and looked on the Epson site before posting. I don't want to void the warranty at this stage so I will send it in. The quality control on this unit really is poor. It wasn't just a little dirty.
If anyone has a good link then please post. I'm sure the issue will come up again.

Good stuff, thanks for the diagram. Cleaning under the glass was very simple, I merely needed a sharp-tipped knife to remove the little caps which cover the screws, and a Philips head screwdriver to remove the 4 screws holding down the glass table. The entire disassemble/clean/reassemble process took only 5 minutes.
For those worried about voiding their warranty, there are no warranty seals or such holding the table, just be careful not to disfigure the screw caps (little black plastic plugs with a "v" on them) when removing them.

That was the right thing to do. For better or for worse, you may not have gotten your machine back. Epson has been known to replace units sent back with a different refurbished unit. This happens with printers also.
