Perhaps we should develop an etymology sticky for rff language, specifically as used on this forum. We could either have it in the general discussion, or stick it in the newbie or faq sections. (For non-native English speakers, etymology is the study of the meaning and development of words.)

This occurred to me when I saw the Ten Commandments of Leica Photography, which refer to a nooky and a soomp; I know what those are, but I don't know why they're called that. I'm also dim about the derivation of the Elmar-related words in Leica photography; I know where Elmar came from, but what about Elmarit? I only recently found out that Leica came from LEI(tz) CA(mera.) There was also a recent question about the meaning of GAS, and a comment from somebody else about variations on that acronym. I think it would be nice to have all this in one place, for those of us wallowing in ignorance.

Great idea. I second the suggestion. As a newbie to this forum and to rangefinder photography, I would definitely benefit from such a thread.
