Later this year the family and I will be taking a vacation in Europe. My wife has put her foot down and will only let me take a maximum of 2 cameras. I will be taking a Leica D-lux 2 as my first camera. For the second camera which system woud you choose...Leica 6, Contax G2, or Mamiya 711? Opinions welcome.

I wouldn't leave home w/out the G2. To me, the G2 is like insurance for bringing back v. good pics. Keep in mind I am not a pro and still depend a lot on all the smarts the camera can offer 🙂

Leica M7, because it's what they used in EuroTrip - the movie

Second that, but leave the wife at home 🙄

And back to real life, take the camera for which you have a 28 or equivalent. Lots of citys with narrow centers here.

If you don't mind lugging bring the Mamiya 7 II but I've found that on trips the smaller the camera the better unless you are going on a photographic specific trip where most of your time will be spent doing photography..

take the G2 because its small and photos with the other choices take time and the Wife isn't going to want to wait around while you meter and focus with the M6...quicking film changing as well

but....I think you'll be most satisfied with the photos coming from the Mamiya 7..big beautiful negs

I have to agree with the 28 or 35mm. I took a Bessa R with a J-8 (50mm) to Italy with me last year, and ican't wait to go back with some better wide angle stuff. I got some good shots, but the sites are much closer than you think. I would definatley take the widest lens and the smallest setup.😱

Take whatever second camera you like best but be sure to take a wide angle or two with it. I have been over a few times and a 28mm felt good and useful to have.

Did she also set a limit on what else to take?

Now there's your bargaining space..

Clear the table, put any two camera bodies on it and all the lenses / tripods / flashes / suitcases / bags / vests / cords / adapters / boxes / caps that you have and the dog -if you have one- too. Then ask her if that is "really what she wants"? You might suggest that if you could just take three cameras, you could forego the tripods / flashes / suitcases / bags / vests / cords / adapters / boxes / caps you have and the dog..

Hope this helps, but given women's logic, I somehow doubt this.. 😉

But if it works, and you've read my suggestions carefully you've not only sneaked in an extra camera, but all your lenses too..

The smallest setup with the widest and longest glass. I just came back from the other side of the pond and was glad I had my Leicas with 28 & 35 glass... and also my 135mm lens.

The Contax G is a very reliable camera. Simply make sure to meter well with it; narrow streets aren't always safe for good metering (got a number of slides to prove a meter fooled). Otherwise, the Leicas are the ticket.

Where in Europe are you going?
