I checked trains from Louvain (you can as well take Brussels; I'm just nearby Louvain):

e.g.:

on Friday 17th:

- 19.26 to Liège-Guillemins (arrival 20.00)
- 20.13 to Cologne (Köln) (arrival 21.15)
- 22:28 to Prague (arrival 9.26).

Total stops: 2. You can sleep in the train to Prague. Total travelling time is then 14.00 hours.

@tom.w.bn: I don't know what train you would take from Köln, but there seems to be a direct to Prague, so not necessarily 5 stops and 15.00 hours ...

Seems perfect to me. I couldn't check the price online, but I'll try to find that out tomorrow.

You can also do it in 9.51 hours, but then there are 3 stops and much less comfortable (it's daytime traveling, with a bus from Nurnberg for the last stretch).

DB Expressbuses are going few times a day from Prague to Nurnberg, where from is direct train to Cologne. Total 7,5 h.

I am lucky with where I live, as I am minutes away from a main east-west train route and half an hour from a small 'cheap-flights' airport. For Prague I jump on the Amsterdam-Prague night train, and that's it for a convenient morning arrival, though I will pay the 20Eur supplement for a bed instead of a recliner I think.

I see. These are the "City Night Line" trains. You don't find them when you search for normal train connections on bahn.de. Must take a closer look tomorrow.

Railway station or airport is a 30 minute car ride for me. Then I have low parking costs (railway) or high parking costs (airport).

Years ago I travelled with an overnight train and when I remember right, then I'm a bit too tall for the bed.
 
Spontaneously I selected Kiev. But Prague as I remember it from the early 90'ies was also an interesting place. A bit too many bill-boards and balloons for my taste later on.
 
No worries. We changed those for microbreweries ;-)

There are still plenty of billboards, unfortunately (as there are in Slovakia). But otherwise the Prague changed quite a bit since early 90' 😉
 
Prague and Amsterdam both sound good.

I would not take the vote too seriously - when we went to Berlin in 2008 we found that no-one who had voted us there had turned up.

Democracy died for me then ;-)
 
I suspect I am working in the wrong time zone or something (it's 03:20).

The result of Prague or Amsterdam seems reasonable, though the total number of votes now seems rather high! Due to the 'interested' nature of recent posts on Prague, and the lack of people complaining about it in the last day or so, I suggest we are going to Prague.

The date poll comes out showing 18th.May as the most popular weekend and certainly indicating the last part of May as most practical for numbers.

Result:

Prague during the weekend of 18th.May 2013.




After a short pause for sleep, there will be a thread for hints and tips from all those concerned over what we might want to do and see, where we may stay, how we may travel and so on.
 
For how many people should I book the pub on Saturday? 🙂

Martin, lucky for you it's not the last weekend in April or first weekend in May. Otherwise I'd be sleeping on your couch!

P.S. One more year in Japan means my English got worse. I join these meets to brush up 😛
