i used to have a buddy that was a painter.
several times a year he would have a show, in his house!
he put up all his latest works on the walls of his home, send out invites and basically have an all day open house.
he sold his paintings and did quite well.

it got me thinking and wondering if that would work for other disciplines, such as photography?

my home has my framed photos on every wall, along with some other, non photo art work of others.

the seed has been planted and so i am thinking i might try the same thing (without the sale aspect), but just to have a show and see what happens.

have any of you tried this?
how did it go?

Sure. Why not. Many East Village galleries started this way back in the 80s here in NYC. They became quite popular and exhibited work that otherwise could not find wall space. Many artists and their galleries became quite well known and eventually morphed into "mainstream" venues.

I think it is a great idea and definitely worth a try. Who knows, this could work into a full time affair for you if you start to exhibit other's work as well.

Slightly off subject

My sister-in-law has a friend who is a painter.. In fact both the friend and her boyfriend are painters. They recent bought an abandoned church in Arizona that they are turning into their home. A large part of buying this property was so they could setup an art gallery to display their work and a large studio for themselves. So they have been pretty busy doing a lot of repartitioning of walls and such.

Back on subject.

Joe I don't c why not, but I kinda think showings should be done w/ bigger pictures for better viewing, so people don't have to crowd together. Jmho.. But I am not sure I understand the intent if u do not eventually plan to sell some of your work.

sounds like a good idea, Joe - just make sure your valuables are locked away! Opportunistic thieves and all that..

Also if it becomes a regular event, watch out for local govt by-laws regarding operating a business from a place of residence. In Oz, that can result in bureaucratic unpleasantness. I don't imagine it would be a problem if you only did it occasionally.

If you go ahead, let us know how it went - and good luck!

After my exhibition in Barcelona I put up about eight images around my apartment. I never considered it an exhibition but of course I always pointed out my work to my guests...

This is something I have been planning. I already put some on the walls but each photo needs custom framing and they are damn expensive here so I have delayed my plans.

i buy cheap black frames from ikea...the 'ribba', i think. they look ok...

i do have some nicer frames for the bigger prints from michaels, bought on sale.

This seems a great idea. If you go on please keep us updated. I would like to try something similar, but my wife would be horrified if I only mention it ...

Why not just recruit a local friendly bar or tavern to serve as the venue?

They take care of serving beer / wine / drinks. You don't have to buy or serve anything.

You don't have to clean up before or afterwards.

You don't have to worry about people in your house.

Many can find the location easier than where you live.

You don't have to be host and can spend all your time mingling with the crowd.

This has worked for me and the bar owner was happy as well.
