Get away with what? Maybe I should have read the entire thread before I replied. It seems much worse now than I initially though.Stephanie Brim said:I'm just wondering why people think that they should be able to get away with things when rules say they can't because 'it's just the internet'. That's why I don't let that excuse slide. It doesn't matter that it's all just 1's and 0's as output; there are people behind those words on your screen.

Unless he's totally clueless, what good would that do? IP blocks are so easy to get around that it's laughable.back alley said:also be advised that he claims to visit here regularly, using his wife's computer and ip.
does anyone remember what name his supposed wife used when she posted here?
if so, please send it to me in a p.m. only.

Well I just finished reading thru this thread and must say I'm shocked. Maybe this IS the kind of thing the owner of this forum doesn't care about. I am still new and it's the first time I had noticed any drama like this so my apologies if my critism is unwanted/ unwarranted. 2 final points...
1. Complaining about folks by giving them free publicity? Perhaps people here are less aware of how things work on the internet/ forums/ life than I thought. Example... Once out of boredom I planned a little membership drive with one of my favorite mods. I banned him and then he went to a much larger forum starting a thread about what a Nazi I was and complaining about life in general. Traffic to my forum increased a little over 85% within a few hours. I told him to link to the thread and then made the thread where only members could read it. Alot of folks registered just to see the thread and were never heard from again. Just as many came back eventually and became regulars. Notice that apug has it where only registered members can access the forum right now. Have some of you put any thought into the fact that you are really doing nothing more than generating traffic for them and increasing the membership over there?
2. If I was really sorry about a thread I would delete it.

That seems like a pretty dishonest way to generate membership.James Brannan said:Well I just finished reading thru this thread and must say I'm shocked. did you really read the thread?
anyway, i was talking about my experience on other forums and not this one. i was frustrated with people who lack the ability to think.
i moderate here and i am a member here. i try to keep that in balance by involving the membership and talking about me and how i do things. i prefer an open and honest approach.

Maybe you should reread your original post. Or maybe I misunderstood? You were talking about complaints concerning your moderation at or of another forum? I would think a moderator would be above that sort of critism though. I would think a moderator would be above that kind of drama. I thought this wasn't "that" kind of forum. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy used to enjoy "that" kind of forum. I used to direct one as a matter of fact. That's why I'm suprised that even one this small doesn't have a mod forum where this kind of thing would be posted. Maybe it does and like at other forums you're not allowed to acknowledge that.back alley said:james.

I've seen examples so far of how you mod. If I had a complaint I would have personally made one already. That's why I'm a little suprised that you even started this thread. Be careful that getting burned out doesn't cause you to stop enjoying this forum all together. You may take this next piece of unsolicited advice as harsh but it isn't meant to be. It is meant to be helpful and will be the last thing I post to this thread. If you can't learn to let go of what people will say about you on other forums then perhaps the best thing to do is just drop being a mod. Part of being a mod is being criticised constantly. Especially if you wish to be (evidenced by this thread) high profile.

Speaking just for myself, I like the fact that Joe allows his human-ess to show through past his role of moderator. I hate (strong word, I know, so I don't use it frivolously) it when people "hide" behind their roles instread of being "real", if you know what I mean. With the RFF moderators being human, it creates a warm and human environment here, rather than a cold and clinical one in which the moderator stays "in role" all the time. Just my opinion.

i'm fine with what you have posted so far.
the criticism of my moderation style came from a banned member but it was posted on another forum. i actually enjoy it here. my frustration came from a tour of other sites and some of what i saw posted there.
it was a general lament about the net, maybe very poorly worded. it wasn't meant to give anyone or anyplace a boost in popularity. that part was taken care of by another member who saw fit to name one of the places i had only referred to.
i never saw myself as high profile but that's something to look at. as far as burning out...also something to think about.

Have you ever had a boss/supervisor that always played the role and never let his/her humaness come out? I think that at the deepest level, we are all connected by being human. At a more superficial level, we have relationships to each other created by the roles we play in life. If I can't connect at the human level in a person because they insist on staying in role, I have little time for them. Again, just my opinion. I'm not saying that everyone has to feel this way. I

Hell, read that "other" scatologcal site. I'm surprised, thought the guy was only joking and really was just pulling legs when he was here. I guess you never know.

I do find it a little odd that RFF now has a dedicated hate site. It reminds me of the "Temple of Hate" created for Arthur Dent in The Hitchhikers Guide To the Galaxy.
With the RFF moderators being human, it creates a warm and human environment here, rather than a cold and clinical one in which the moderator stays "in role" all the time.

I won't comment on the site you linked, but I've seen this happen in other hobby based forums. A few members get banned from Site A, form Site B which exists solely to trash posters on Site A, since they can no longer post there. I'm waiting for Site C any day now...

This is totally ugly. In every sense of the word.
His rants are pretty much nonsensical and his accusations unfounded. All those porn pics are links to retailers' websites, other forums or actual porn sites. Who's he trying to impress? I can't believe he was ever a member here!
BTW, he also likes to make comments on Chris Weeks' blog, and he's just as much as a suck-ass the rest of Chris's minions - mimicing Chris's colorful vocal style (in need of some recognition?).
This guy gives Vancouver a bad name!
