everyday camera

I carry a Leica M4-P with either a 50mm Summicron or Elmar as my everyday camera. However, if I'm going to a restaurant, I take my Hexar AF. It's easier for me to shoot in low light interiors and I don't worry about setting it down on a table filled with food.

You're so cynical, Bill. You have to learn to be more trusting and take folks at their word. Either that or I'm too naive.

Oh, nothing wrong with a $9 everyday camera. I've got a $2 garage sale camera in my desk at work.

Sorry, I just don't see that.

I do admire those with the commitment to carry their primary cameras with them everyday. I don't doubt it.

My "every day" is an Oly Stylus Epic. But the other day just for fun, I carried an old TLR camera that my Dad owned, a 1940's Cyroflex, into a local restaurant just for fun and set it on the table. Someone came over and asked in all seriousness if it could see around corners!

you should have told them...

you should have told them...

"no, but it can see through clothes!!"

If my Nikon FE wasn't so heavy, I would take it, tarted up with the 50mm/1.4, everywhere. But it is heavy, so it's either the Ricoh Gr1s or the Canonet QL17 GIII that gets tucked into my bag - or pocket - on a daily basis.

Lynn,
If you weighed the FE with say a 50mm f1.8 E lens, against the Canonet, you might be surprised. I carry my FE2 almost everywhere 😉

I go for walks almost every day and generally want a small, lightweight camera with me. My main choices, in terms of frequency are:

1. Canon A620 digi P&S in a belt pouch
2. Olympus Stylus Epic in a pocket
3. Canonet QL17 GIII in a belt pack

All are smallish and relatively lightweight and good for those brisk cardiac rehab walks!

bill,

i m3 just want zi to express my cl disappointment 90/2.8 that you would think elmar 50 that we or i would 50/1.2 somehow think that i had a bigger zm 25 than someone else just because zm 50/2 of the equipment that i might zm 35 own.

it's kinda 35/2.8 sad...

Sounds as if some folks doubt what other folks carry as "go to work" kits.

Here's my setup as described in an earlier post.

Most times I only carry one of the cameras - placed inside the blue cloth bag laying in front of the nylon "knapsack" for protection until I pull it out to shoot.

I walk to work with this kit - why would anyone think this isn't so?

I'm very fickle.
If I get a new camera then that becomes the one I bring with me all the time.
However, I normally return to my Leica M3 w/ Summicron 50/2.
Love that camera.

I haven't settled on a go to camera for daily use-
But there is either one in my brief case or a cheapo in my desk drawer at work every day.

Canonet 28 (in the drawer)
Yashica GSN or Professional (2 different cameras)
Kodak Retina IIa
FED 3 w/J8

Sometimes it's the Argus C44 w/Cintagon 50mm, or my recently acquired but in need of TLC Kiev 4a w/J8.

I still haven't covered all of the Gaslamp yet. I'm working on it.

Bill, I don't see this the same way you do. I don't think it's a "mine is bigger" contest (can I even play at that?) or about conspicuous consumption or about expensive cameras. My two favorite cameras were both free (if you can call losing your dad at age 12 "free"), my dSLR came out of an equipment budget, and all the other stuff I have was either extremely cheap or a gift. I would never buy or use a camera just because it cost a lot. My income would never allow me to buy any of this new. I can't even afford to eat out.

I carry my M3 because until very recently it was the only 35mm film camera I owned. I don't carry a $9 camera because I don't have any. I don't have many cameras. Everything I own is in my .sig. If my mother decides she doesn't want my Olympus Stylus Epic (which I gave her long ago because I'd gotten the Coolpix -- also from an equipment budget if it matters) then I'll carry that one with me a lot of the time because it's so tiny and takes great photos, but I don't have it now.

I carry my M3 more often than my Canonet and my Olympus 35 SP simply because I'm more used to it and because I have warm fuzzies for it due to my history with it, not because it's worth more or it's more German or has a bigger unit or whatever.

I hope that helps straighten things out.

Well, 99% of the time I have something with me. Which camera it is depends on: which film is in which camera(I generally have color print in one and B&W in another), am I thinking of something specific or just carrying in case something interesting happens?, am I only going off to work or somewhere else?
And I tend to use the latest "new" toy pretty heavily while I learn/test it.
I have a moderate range of choices but am tending towards vintage lately so the "kit" varies. I buy the gear I do to use first and to fondle second.
If(OK, OK when) I can no longer resist those FKD 13x18 plate cameras, they will not be my everyday camera but none of my other stuff has any special status beyond working/not working.
