2017 starts in a very very good way for all film photographers.
And here we have even more exciting news:
Now from Adox:
This year they will double (!!) their production area / factory space at their headquarter in Germany (they also have a factory in Switzerland, former Ilford Imaging).
The increased factory will include a second space for a coating machine, complete new photo chemistry manufacturing, S8 film converting line, more labs, cool storage for masterrolls and so on.

Have a look at the details:

Long live film :)

So I assume that they're doing well. I would like to give their products a go at some point (at the moment I am autistically attached to Kodak Tmax).

Wonderful news. ADOX makes some wonderful films, and their paper recipes are among my favorites. The Variowarmtone paper is one of the best ever available IMO. Surprisingly ordering from Germany and shipping to the US is not that bad cost wise, as the VAT is waived.

Ye, their paper-lineup is not only very good, it's also pretty extensive, lot to choose from and good quality too.

That are excellent news, indeed!

Adox has lots of outstanding products. Some of them are absolutely unique, like the Axos CMS 20 II high resolution film and Adox Lupex paper.

- Adox MCP and MCC silver-halide paper: I love them, so wonderful papers
- Adox Lupex: highest resolution paper on the market
- MCC developer, Adotol konstant and the complete Neutol line of developers; all excellent stuff,
- legendary Rodinal (Adonal) and Adox FX-39: belong to the best film developers ever
- Adox Silvermax: by far the best replacement for the original German Agfa APX 100 (and much much better than the current AgfaPhoto 100 New which is only re-labelled Kentmere 100)
- Adox CHS 100 II and Scala 160 BW: Outstanding BW reversal films.

Such true manufacturers like Adox with so much enthusiasm, hard work and investment in real new production absolutely deserve our support.
And not those selling nine year old film from leftover stock, telling fairy tales about it in their marketing and offer it at insane prices.

Cheers, Jan

Adox 20 is an excellent film that I use frequently and I have had very good results from Silvermax.

Unfortunately finding these for sale in the US is sometime touch and go. I have had a standing order for Silvermax at BHPhoto for over 3 months which has not yet been filled.

Freestyle does carry Adox films but they have also been out of Silvermax for awhile.

Perhaps more production capability will help with these issues.

I liked Adox films and I also liked their Croatian relatives in the recently defunct Efke films.

As Adox Silvermax has always been available without problems at Fotoimpex and other European suppliers, that is definitely not a production problem.
Looks like a problem at Freestyle and BH.

Maybe you just order at Fotoimpex. They ship internationally.

Cheers, Jan

Ironically, Fotoimpex only lists Silvermax in the 3 roll development kit at the moment. Single rolls are shown as not in stock.
Wouldn't you know?

Thanks! One must never get too impatient. It is, after all, film. The archival media of patient people.

I picked up my 1st batch of Silvermax from Fotoimpex when it first came out. I don't remember shipping cost being a problem but it did take several weeks to arrive.

I got my 2nd from BH Photo so just thought I would order from them again.

If Freestyle expects their shipment soon then I may just order from them as I am running low on Rodinal as well.

Excuse my ignorance, but why would I pay $8.99 for a roll of Adox if I can get Kodak Tmax or Tri-X for $4.89? What justifies paying $4.10 more per roll?

European mystique? German film for a German camera and lens? Because you can't get real Agfa film anymore?
Twice the price hey? Buy Kodak.

I've got a shipment only some weeks ago, no problems.
You can also order it in the Scala 160 BW version (technically same film, same price). It is available.

It is not a price difference of 4,10$ here in Europe.
Just the other way round:
Adox Silvermax is cheaper here than TMX or Tri-X.

But aside from the price: I like the tonal rendition and spectral sensivity of Silvermax more than TMX / TX.
And Silvermax / Scala 160 BW is also an excellent BW reversal film, and I like projection of BW slides: It is outstanding!

Different look. I don't get why people simply assume that the cheapest film is the better option in every case. With this logic only FOMA should be used as it is always the cheapest. If it can't deliver a smooth grain so what? If it is cheapest, it is automatically better than even Tri-X.

Sometimes the ADOX will deliver the look someone is after, sometimes it will be Tri-X. Sometimes (gasp) it will be Rollei. A wide range of film types is a useful thing when one is able to exploit the differences in work.

Fair enough. How would you compare the look produced by ADOX 100 to Rollei Retro 80s?

Never tried Rollei Retro. I shoot RPX25, which is contrasty, but very crisp. The ADOX is less crisp, with a nice tonality that favors the mid tones, an older look to my eye. I quite like it on overcast days.

Thanks for your reply. Does RPX25 give you strong blacks and whites with clarity?

What was I thinking? I would gladly pay double the price for fresh Plus-X.
Or Kodachrome even.
I may have to try some Silvermax. In a German camera. With a German lens. With a German developer.
