Expired film? What's the appeal?

I mainly use out of date film because I bought a ton of it when it was cheap. Another reason is that I keep getting complaints about the film in the fridge; I won't mention names but - if you were at the wedding - she was wearing a white dress and standing at the front...

Most foods with expiration dates are fine after that date....could it be they simply want you to dump it and buy new?
At least with film you're not risking salmonella or something equally nasty. 😱

Now *that's* a horrible mental picture - catching something explosive off your film stock!

I recently shot a roll of Verichrome Pan that expired in 1977 just to see how it would perform. I know the history since it is family film. It was never stored in a freezer or refrigerator. That might scare some but I exposed it at ASA 50 and developed it in HC-110, dilution H for 9 minutes.

I was pleased with these results.

I'm curious about using expired film. I mean really expired film, years past its use-by date. Aside from the challenge of getting an image, what goals are you setting for yourself?

Film that's no longer made e.g., plus-x, efke, ect.

Greatly expired C41 film can sometimes show tones and colors in ways that are very hard to predict, or replicate. For me, it proves fun. This set was made with some 22 years (or more) out of date APS film in a Contax TIX camera. Stunning little camera, I wish they'd made it as a half-frame 35mm instead of APS film 'cause I'd still be using it.

... Oh yes, most of my Minox factory load film is 20 years past expiration too, but it's mostly APX25 and that will take eons to go bad. 🙂
