Hi all.
How expired is too expired?
I found some rolls of Velvia 50 in my fridge expired 2006. Is there any chance the results could be ok? I don't expect super authentic colors because I don't care for them but a strong green/magenta cast would be terrible.
I know I could just try the films out but E6 development is super expensive nowadays and I don't want to waste potentialy good shots.
Thanks in advance.

I shot some ten to fifteen year expired Velvia and Ektachrome on holiday a couple of years ago, and to my eyes it looks exactly the same as fresh film. I exposed it all at box speed and developed normally.
I bought the film from someone who had stored it frozen, and I did the same. If yours has been fridge stored since purchase, I'll bet it will be just fine. But like you say, if it's for something important, either test a roll first or use fresh film.

Ok, thanks!
I have to try E6 developing at home - here it costs 10 Euros and you have to wait 2 weeks.

No, it can be a lot cheaper. You are located in Autriche - Austria - Österreich.
Have a look at Fayer in Vienna:
http://www.fayer.at/de/preise-und-lieferzeiten
Only 6 Euros and max. one week waiting time.
You could also send the films to Germany, Photo Studio 13:
https://www.photostudio13.de/
Prices are even significantly lower compared to Fayer, and PS 13 is doing E6 every day. Perfect quality with Refrema dip-and-dunk machines, and even two-bath fixing.
They do international business, so sending films from Austria is no problem at all.
Doing E6 at home is of course the cheapest. And you can get perfect quality by using a JOBO processor and the Fuji E6 home processing kit. It is very easy and a lot of fun.

I shot some Velvia that expired in the late 1990s and it turned out okayish, though the colors were much less saturated.

Thank you, Jan!
6 Euros is a reasonable price. Ten years ago E6 development was 4.50,-
1.50 increasment is ok

Yes, that is much cheaper than most other labs. And it is high-quality dip-and-dunk processing. And AgX Imaging is very fast, because he is doing E6 every day.

Do they also scan such film for an extra fee? I bet they do.

Think Different
I can vouch for AgX Imaging. Sault Ste. Marie is less than a two hour drive from my house and I traveled up to Michael’s lab, a few years back, to drop off some Velvia, and to see his lab in person. Besides being a nice guy, he does absolutely top notch work. I just had him process 13 sheets of 4x5 Velvia 100 and a few rolls of 120 Velvia.
I process all of my C41 and B&W 4x5 film at home. The E6 stuff I send to AgX, he does it better than I can.
