explain your avatar

I was trying to photograph the design left by a bucket of paint leaking onto our parking lot from the bed of a painter's truck on a windy day. I couldn't compose the shot the way I wanted without my shadow in the picture so I used it to advantage. The paint had leaked and partially dried... then he backed through it when leaving. It's now one of my favorite images.

My avatar is the visualization of the IFGA formula: Image Size, Focal Distance, Object Size/Ground Coverage, Focal Distance (Formula; US Navy photography.) Using the IFGA formula in aerial photography, it is possible to determine the size of an object on the ground in an aerial photograph.

The graphic I use as my avatar was the rating badge of a U.S. Navy Photographer's Mate (PH) during the Vietnam era when I was in. It was later changed to include wings, as Photographer's Mates were considered an aviation rating rather than a "black-shoe" or sea-going rating.

The rating of Photographer's Mate was retired in July of 2006 when the job was merged into the new Mass Communications Specialist (MC).
 
It's a movie made by James Cameron, where he ripped off the plots of Dances with Wolves and Pocahontas, and set them in space. It uses every predictable scifi and action film trope to the point where it is annoyingly predictable, even on first viewing. It treats the audience like imbeciles, with totally black and white characters and the ideological equivalent of a giant billboard written with slogans a two year old could understand.

Oh, you mean explain MY avatar...?
 
My avatar is a photograph of my newborn while laying on a blanket and playing with a intricately painted Japanese rattle purchased for her by my best friend. It was taken by my iPhone version 1. I bought my iPhone the day it was released and of course it came with 1st version software. This iPhone photograph was a "glitch" of some kind and created a photograph reminiscent of the late work of dutch painter Piet Mondrian. I liked it enough to do some post production on it and the result was an interesting black & white. The result was unique and I thought it would make a nice avatar.
 
I thought I'd posted in this thread once or twice since Frank started it but I guess not.
Anyway, my current avatar is me at age 9 or 10, the photo was taken by my mom while we were visiting Uncle Watt and Aunt Reethy. Both long since passed.
So so scan from a print. Probably the camera was a Kodak 126 instamatic.

As mansio noted, it can be pretty funny when the avatar pic changes but the description stays the same. Here's my original description: This is a picture of my father. He's in his 70's. I think he has an interesting look. One day I may look like my father.

Tell me about it. I started on the 1st page and had a good laugh. Mine is a picture from the 1st time I excitedly used a tripod for long exposure, trespassed, almost got caught by the police, and brought along a nervous girl with whom I wasn't married to (yet).
 
My avatar is a shot taken by my missus of me (#117) racing my 410 sprinter back in '89 at Susquehanna Speedway. It took us 3 years paycheck to paycheck to get the car to the track, and managed to run full time for only a year.......not a poor man's sport! We spent enough to buy a house outright, but I wouldn't trade the experience for the world. I do believe it contributed to many premature white hairs though....Ha!

@Sparky, my sincere condolences on the loss of your beloved Golden Retriever. The pain we feel when they pass, is the price we pay for the unconditional love they give us....
