Exposing Eastman (Double-X) 5222 in the Leica

Over the last week I've exposed 4 rolls of XX. I experimented with using Tmax developer at work just for S&G's and it wasn't bad at all. A little bit of a steep curve and some really dense highlights but I expected that from Tmax. From what I've seen, I really like the look of this film so far and it's only going to get better.
This next three rolls I'll be using HC-110 to develop. Results should be up by the end of this week.

Here are a couple from the second roll I was given by RFF's own K14 (Gary). I exposed them at EI 200 and, like my first roll, they came out a bit "hot". This could very well be my exposure technique, as I tend to meter for a bit of over exposure. Combined with the fact that I rated it at a lower EI than the 250 recommended for my developer (D76 1:1 for ten minutes at 68F), that might explain it. Still, there's plenty of detail on the negative, and bringing it down in Photoshop was no problem. Next weekend I will probably try to print one of these, which I haven't done with Double-X yet.

I like shooting with it, but I don't know if I'm ready to get 400 feet of it and spool it all myself just yet. I may wait for a few spare canisters to come my way again.

Hi Tom,

+1 on the the ADOX Borax MQ. I am now on my fourth can of XX, and it's been all Adox for me, 8-9 mins at 20C. In time I will experiment with other developers, but when one finds something that works well, why make a change? Best to learn it well.

I've got about ten rolls of XX, Presto 400 Fuji and TX I will be running all together, hopefully later today.

Hi. I am new to 5222 and like it a lot. One question do: does this film have same antihalation backing as Tmax 400 ? In last development I've got a pinkish hue.

Double X in Adox MQ for 8+ minutes. The + designation is a timing check. I start the Gralab when the Adox is fully poured in and stop just before pouring out. Just a bit of a "kick" to contrast in the rather dull December light.

A friend gave me some ORWO 74+ which is ORWO's 400 iso movie stock (and he also gave me some ORWO 54+ which is their 100 iso stock). Check "www.orwona.com" for more information. I shot a quick test roll and did run it with some XX in Adox for 8 min. Looks good, grain is similar to XX and resolution also similar - and might even be a bit better.
I will load up the rest in IXMOO's and shot it over the next week or two and try with some other developers too.
The 100 could be the replacement for EK 5231 - which I sorely miss. Should work well in Beutler and/or Rodinal. Waiting for some kind of better light for that one.
ORWO labels the 74+ as 400 in daylight and 250 in tungsten - but I shot is as I usually do XX - loosely rated at 320.

I know it works in Canada and in the US. I don't see why it wouldn't work for European schools as well. You may have to do some searching on Kodak's website or even make a phone call to find out how you can get the educational discount.

We're talking the student purchase price for the 400 or 1000 ft rolls, not retail. If Kodak honors the student purchase program in Europe the price should be much lower. As a student in an accredited program, I get 400ft rolls for less than $100usd. It's on Kodak's educational services page in the US, I don't know what the equivalent in Europe is.
