Exposing Eastman (Double-X) 5222 in the Leica

does anyone have a few rolls of this film they would sell to me? i was supposed to get some from the xmas giveaway thread but they never came and i definitely dont need a whole bulk roll of it.
 
I have to shoot xx in iso 1600. Any developing suggestion ?

XX @ 320, developed in PCK (Phenidone/Ascorbic Acid = Vit C). This is Patrick Gainer's concoction and it works very well with XX/ORWO/Tri X. I usually run it for 7-7.5 minutes. Not fine-graines by any means - a mixture of Rodinal/D76 look to it.
Easy to mix too as it can be done in room temperature.
M2 and Zeiss Biogon 21mm f2.8

Where XX shines! Extreme contrast and an old lens (1958 Summicron 35f2). Though the left sied is a bit burned out - there is still detail in the "glare" and the shadows hold up fine.
This was with the PCK developer for 7.5 min and the film rated at iso 320.

You never got the film I sent? I sent a package to you and DNG the same day. I wonder if he got it...

See above (from previous posting re:sprocket hole capability). I don't use Nikons anymore, I use Minolta SRT's, and they all work just fine with XX. And also my motorized SRM (3.5 FPS) body has never given me a bit of problem with XX.

Don't know about the F5.

Comparison shot: Acros 100 @ 100 iso - developed in the same batch of PCK as the ORWO UN 54.
SP and Opton Sonnar 85f2 (1950's lens). The Acros has higher contrast, but less emphasis on mid-tones. I kind of prefer the ORWO here. Highlights are a bit "fried".

As far as I know, there is no phenidone in PCK. Do you have in mind another formula ?

PCK is phenidone, ascorbate and metaborate:
Part A
Phenidone 0.3 grams (dissolve in 30 ml alcohol)
Ascorbic Acid 20 grams
Water to 500 ml

Part B
Sodium Metaborate (Kodalk) 100 grams
or
Borax 69 grams + sodium hydroxide 14.5 grams
Water to 1000 ml

Process:
50 ml A/100 ml B H2O to 1000 ml

Develops Tri-X in about 8 minutes.

This is one of the (numerous) variations of PC-Glycol made by Gainer, but it's not PCK (see http://unblinkingeye.com/Articles/Rodinal/rodinal.html).

I wonder what formula used by Tom A for UN54.
 
I use the standard formula as per above. I tried several variations of the PCK and I found that I got the most consistency with that one. I have been using it for at least 10-12 years now.
I like the fact that I can quickly mix up a new batch if I run out.
The glycol/PCK is OK, but "nuking" the anti-freeze in the micro-wave is a bit disconcerting! I did not se enough of a difference between the old formula and the glycol one to warrant strange tasting food!
I am checking my supplies to see that I have enough to make up the glycol based Pyrocat HD for the summer. Pyrocat HD is a great developer but you have to live with the rather short life-span of the A component (2-3 month and it "dies" a bit as it is used up).
The PCK is my "fall back" soup in most cases.
 
Gainer calls (or has called) both the para-aminophenol and phenidone versions of the developers that have ascorbate and Kodalk as their other components PCK. I have messages from him that refer to them both as this.

Loving all of the stuff posted here! I'd hoped to contribute some of my own from the rolls of 5222 and 5231 I've got waiting, but of course the day after I ordered the 5222 I discovered 2485 for AU$21 per 150 feet...

What I will contribute though is a quick hint for people finding themselves in a similar position to "ipu" back at post 946, or at least as to finding out the age of your film.

Unlike their still division, Kodak's Cinema and Television group have been marking their films with the year of manufacture for nearly one hundred years now. For all films until 1989 this took the form of a little group of one, two, or three symbols, but from 1989 onwards camera negative and intermediate films marked with KEYKODE have their years encoded as a two-letter cipher in the human readable section between barcodes.

In Ipu's photo the text "EASTMAN 5222 169 0101 124 NK" is visible. The NK represents manufacture in 1996.

Don't confuse these with the KEYKODE IDs that you seen in large text before the footage count and barcode. For all forms of DXN the KEYKODE ID is "KE" (and "KH" for PXN).
