Are there any side by side comparisons of 5222 with some of the commonly available films? (I can't go through 71 pages to try to find this, if it's even there).

Lots of Grain and Contrast. What EI did you shoot DoubleX at and how did you develop?

I am now doing Xtol 1:1 for 7:30min and I shoot it at 400. I don't get quite the contrast you are showing above. I tried processing it in the same developer for 10minutes but got very dense negatives. Then went for 9 minutes and was still quite dense. Dropped it to 8min and then 7:30, both of which gave similar pleasing results but no longer contrasty.

I used a green filter for the first shot, and a red for the other two.

I took your times from the "last thing you printed thread" of that man on the bus. Shot it at 400, and developed it at 1:50 just like you. The only difference I might have done was agitate differently. I did an inversion every minute.


My next roll will be shot at 250, and developed in xtol for 8 minutes.

Got it, Rodinal! Of course, hence the grain. Yes - I quite like XX in Rodinal but I am afraid of the grain when printing large which I am experimenting with these days.

Please post back with your Xtol results, very curious. I am still not very confident with using Xtol...

Example of Double X EI200 in Xtol 1:1 and Rodinal 1+100 added for last 4 minutes of developing time (total 10 minutes, agitation 30 sec to start then every 3 minutes for 10 sec).

Here is my first attempt at developing a roll of Eastman 5222 Double X. Our nine year old grandson in our home. Shot at 200, developed in D76 1+1.

Thanks, Dan, I am happy with my test roll. Scans look great and I am finishing PP today.

I now have a good idea of how and when I will be using Double X!! And I appreciate the craft of photography rather than the popular concept of photography being simply the pressing of a button on a computer that you have pointed at a motif.

Just shooting around the house and finding unsuspecting motifs. The dog would not sit still!

I may find time this evening to post a few more. The Nikkor lens did a reasonable job of rendering but I have a much better lens in mind for my next roll. Developing 5222 is an interesting experience and I am looking forward to nailing the D76 down, then trying something else a little different (maybe Harvey's 777?).😱

i'm shooting with 5222 for almost two months.
Previously i was developing with Perceptol (1+2) and DDX (1+4) with satisfactory results,
but last time i developed in D-96 (stock, 7 min at 21c as in the data sheet), the results were awesome.
