I have been surfing this thread for a week now getting through it. I'm up to page 37 but I decided to see if anyone was posting anything current.

I bought a 400' roll from Kodak and am loving this film. I started developing in HC110B and that was fine but I mixed up my own D96 and developed another one yesterday. Well...I misread the dev time and almost doubled it! Yikes.

Talk about bullet proof negatives with contrast. 😱

I'm taking 10 rolls with me to Washington DC this weekend, hope to get something worth printing.

PS: What happened to Tom that you posted in his memory? EDITED TO ADD: I just looked it up...I'm so sorry to hear of his passing. I was going through the thread and had no idea.

Back from D.C.
Starting to process rolls of 5222.

I shot the roll at 320 and developed it in D96 for 7m.

Ill take a close look at the negatives to decide but if scanning is any indicator, then this combo will print very nicely

Not in a Leica, but my Canon L1 with Canon 25/3.5. 5222-XX in Xtol.

Question for all you Double-XX shooters, who also shoot Tri-X.

When comparing Double-XX to Tri-X, shooting with old (1950's) Nikkor LTM lenses, I find the Double-XX has less contrast and smoother mid-tones than the Tri-X and am wondering if others find this as well. To bump up the contrast, I usually add a yellow filter when shooting Double-XX, but even with the yellow filter, I find the Double-XX to be not as "harsh" contrast-wise as the Tri-X. Wondering if others see this as well, or that maybe I just have my Double-XX processing down better than my processing with Tri-X?

Any thoughts?

I thought I would kickstart this thread again. Sadly it has dwindled since Tom has left us. I know there are still people shooting 5222 out there even if it is more expensive now. I have a ton of it in the freezer, and started shooting it again so I thought I would pick up the torch so to speak.

By the way, since I have a bunch, and respooling is such a pain by hand, I bought a couple of oooooooold film winders/rewinders on ebay then screwed them to a small board. Now it is a piece of cake to respool the 400' onto 100' spools. Only takes a minute! I get three stuffed-full spools from 400' of 5222. That makes bulk loading pretty easy.

Thought I would throw that out there for anyone interested in shooting 5222 or any other movie film. There are a bunch of winders/rewinders on Ebay. I think I paid only $10 for mine.

I'm still shooting it, but just not now. I'm finishing off the five rolls of Ferrania P30 which I bought. On my last roll now, when that's gone, it's back to 5222-XX.

I started this thread and I'm still around. Still shooting XX but not much lately.

I have become entranced with 70mm and have been pushing that whole thing a bit.

Need to get the Minoltas going, they are all still loaded with XX.

All this new stuff is beautiful. Keep 'em coming Guys!

I finally tried my first rolls of XX a month or so ago (found a 400' can for $50 😀). I developed it in HC-110. I was not impressed! Tried a couple more rolls and have not been particularly pleased. I need to experiment more. Perhaps Pyrocat. And perhaps need to use it in different situations.

Leica CL + Jupiter 9 - Double-X exposed at 650 and developed in Diafine. For me, this combination is like magic. No matter what kind of lighting I have it always gives me the contrast and tonality that I want.

Contax ST/28mm Yashica ML/Edwal 10

I've found Edwal 10 to be an excellent developer. Basic too, with just the addition of Glycin to a basic Metol developer. Edwal 12 is also excellent, and although i haven't developed any 5222 in it, I think it would be an excellent developer for 5222. It requires PPD though, which can be hard to get since PhotoFormulary is the only place to get it. Next time i order chems which should be soon i am going to pick up some PPD and make both Edwal 12 and Edwal 20.
