External light meters or internal?

I use a hand-held still with the M2 and sometimes even with the M6, with many advantages, including as Sug mentioned, not having the camera to the eye for any longer than is required to get the shot. I haven't learnt well enough yet the excellent in-camera meter of the M6, but was further encouraged to do so by one chastening observation on this forum relevant to my juggling two meters: which one to go with? Just like the man with two watches who doesn't know what time it is.
