Hi guys,

My new external meter is here, I've bought a sekonic studio deluxe II (L-398M). I've never used an esternal meter and it's come without manual. Can you help me and explain me how to use?

If it works like my L28c2, it is fairly simple. Set the ASA (ISO), take a meter reading, set the camera and snap the photo. Wasn't that simple? :D

Did you get a lumisphere, lumidisk and lumigrid with it? The lumisphere is used for incident readings. The lumidisk (the flat one) is used for lighting ratios, and the lumigrid (the one with holes in it is used for reflected light readings.

Did you get a set of slides with it, or at least the high slide? With that in, on the inner dial you will see both a red H and a white L. Set the reading from the needle on that setting, using the white scale that goes from 5 to 1.25M. If you remove the slide (be sure to put it in its holder on the back of the meter) then of course, use the L to set the scale. Whichever you have used, you can then read the correct matching f/stop and shutter speeds in the window of the outer dial. IIRC, for reflected light you must remove the high slide also.

If you have the other slides, they are marked for film speeds you may use. You use the f/stops as read from the upper scale under the needle, and a fixed film speed of either 1/125 or 1/250. I don't remember which, but I think it is the latter.

I am sure my explanation seems short. You might want to go to http://www.sekonic.com/InstrManuals/L-398M.pdf for a pdf version of the manual at Sekonic's site. Good luck with it. Those are really great meters!

Edit: Wow! While I was typing this, I see you already got the url for the manual. Again, good luck, and if you have any other questions, don't hesitate to ask here in the forum.
