Hi guys!

Since I switched to RF, I have been experiencing irritation in my right eye after shooting sessions. I suspect that I'm keeping my eye too close to the viewfinder glass as I'm trying to see the entire frame, and it might even be touching it occasionally. Is this a common thing? Any advice?

Thanks in advance.

Cheers,
Edward

It is pretty hard to "come too close" unless you lost all your eyelashes to some medical condition. And even if, touching a glass surface (or rubber or metal ring) will not do any damage, or contact lenses would be a impossibility.

It is more likely that your eye gets strained by a finder corrected to a value at odds with your needs. Some makers default to a close viewing distance (usually -1 dioptre, i.e. 1m), which will be strenuous on presbyopic or hyperopic eyes, others default to infinity which is correspondingly unpleasant if you should be myopic. And if you bought your camera used, there could be some even more unsuitable correction dioptre installed.

Thank you sevo!

I did buy my M6 used, but my 2 ZI are new. I understand the standard diopter is -0.5. Not sure if this could be the reason, so perhaps I should get my eyes checked.

Hey,

If the irritation is allergy like, You can tape everything around the viewfinder. I'm allergic to nickel and chrome, and for me only solution is to not to touch anything that's covered with these materials. Even rubbing an eye with a finger that touched nickel/chrome may cause irritaton.

Thats just another possible explanation.

Cheers.

Thank you Pawel. Yes, the irritation is allergy like. Now, 4 hours after the shooting session is over, my eye is back to normal, or almost. I might have to look for some generic eyecups.

Of course, I did, but they all had some kind of a rubber eyecup or plastic frame. I still suspect the reason of this irritation to be caused by my eye (or eyelashes as you pointed out) rubbing against the glass. Are there any eyecups available for the M and ZI? Tried to search but couldn't find anything.
