Eye piece replacement

It seems I'm abusing my R-D1 a bit. It's showing wear already but that's fine. It's a tool for me, not a mantle piece ornament. But the screw-on rubber eye piece is becoming torn and I'm wondering whether it can be replaced. I mean, is there a replacement available somewhere, or should I go for a magnifier of some sorts? That wouldn't be such a bad idea for me as I hardly ever us the 1:1 magnification and would prefer something like the .72x of the Leica M2.

My eyepiece is still O.K., but I would also opt for a 0.72x (de) magnifier and sacrifice the 1:1 viewing (which only works well for me with a 50mm lens) if one was available and this would allow a better view of the 28mm & 35mm framelines with my glasses on.

The round screw-in eyepieces from Nikon SLRs fit perfectly (the small-diameter variety from older Nikon models). Couldn't tell you which models, but they are still available new.

I've an eyecup version on order (about 14 euros), but I assume the standard version is similar to the R-D1 one.

If there's a "proper" camera shop left near you, there's a fair chance of finding a second-hand one...

Nope, no decent shop here.

Can you tell me where you ordered the eyecup?

Can anyone tell me which Nikon eye pieces I can use, how to distiquish them (model names or such?) and where to get them (eBay is fine)?
 
I'm finding them on eBay, for some $5. Not bad.

But how about a (de)magnifier to .72x? Does that exist?
 
A .72 (de)magnifier would be nice for use eyeglass wearers...especially for that pesky 28mm frameline. But what about the baseline issue? Wouldn't a demagnifier reduce the effective baseline of the rangefinder? I use my 40mm f1.4 Nokton alot and wouldn't want to lose too many shots to focus error.

Well, IMO the whole debate over EBLs and such is a bit overrated. I've used my CL with the smallest EBL of all Leicas with my 85/2 wide open and can focus it properly consistently. Give me that .72x magnification and I'll be happy, I hope. :)

No problem.
You only need 17.14mm EBL to focus accurately ar f/1.4 with a 40mm lens.
The R-D1's would be 38.2mm x 0.72 = 27.5mm with a .72x magnification.

What was the formula that you used to figure the minimum effective baseline for a given FL & F#? I thought I was pushing the limit with F1.4 on a short baseline even with a short focal length.
Are these negative magnifiers available for other viewfinders? I didn't know you could do such a thing with a single element. Would it increase the eyerelief also? I quess what eyeglass wearers really want is a R2A viewfinder on our R-D1.

b' = (e * f^2) / (k * z) where b' is the effective base length, e the visual acuity (0.0003 at approx. 1 arcmin), f the focal length, k the aperture and z the circle of confusion (0.020mm).

After this little intermezzo, back to my question. :)

How about a (de)magnifier to .72x? Does that exist?
