EZ border

For Joe:

This tip is for CS but I think it works on other versions as well.

*Once your image is sized for the web, click on "image" then "canvas" size.

*In the width and height boxes enter a value (this will be the thickness of your border).

*In the canvas extension box pick a color, white or black, click OK.

*Viola!

I usually use .5"-1" for my canvas size, all you are doing is creating a larger canvas for your image and choosing the color.

Good Luck,
Todd

If you don't mind placing the border inside your photo, use the rectangular tool and draw a border any size within the photo. Under selection, click inverse. Select a color, go to "fill" and your border is any size and color chosen.

i believe you can also just pull your cropping tool lines outside the image for a really quick border, but i think Todd has it right. Thanks for the tip Todd (even though this was for Joe).

Oh, finally something I can add something to!

I too prefer Todd`s method of enlarging the canvas, but I usually like to use Layers. Here`s how:

1. doubleclick on the background in the layers palette to create a "proper" layer from it
2. click the little right arrow in the same palette and create a new layer
3. Enlarge the canvas (image-> canvas size) as desired.
4. Fill the new layer with you desired border color.
5. You now can add a dividing line between the picture and the border by rightclicking the picture layer and selecting blending options.

I mostly use a 1 pixel black "Stroke", but you can experiment with "drop shadow" or "bevel+emboss" if you like.

A viola is a sort of big violin isn't it ?

ok, i got it to work, remember the border...

my handy dandy book told me i had to pick a colour for the background first and then resize the canvas.

Thought it would Joe - that page and the action(s) have been there awhile, and I was sure I used them with PS7.

You lost me a bit with your comment 'remember the border' but what I do is use 2 stages - use the Black Border action, then a matting one. Or alternatively, use the double matt action with a very small inner matt (for the border)

The samples under the 'frames folder' at the bottom in the left hand side column of
each epp webpage, give good examples.

Changing matt(s) colour is dead easy with the magic wand and then using the fill or even gradient fill tools. I sometimes use the colour picker to select a nice complimentary or a contrasting colour directly from the image for the matt. Sometimes a totally unusual colour works too !

Did you see the handy 35mm Film & sheet film frames?

airds,

the remember comment was more aimed at the off topic stuff...too subtle perhaps.

afa mats, magic wands and colour pickers, i'm in the dark.
but that's ok. i can make a plain border and put my name in it and that's more than i could do last week.

i don't want to overwhelm myself...;)

Whoa... how'd you put your name in it? I'm trying to learn this along with you. :)

click on the big t on the left.
take the cursor and click on the border where you want the text.
write your name.

pretty cool eh?
