Long Live Film!!!
Ok... so the recent F6 that sold for 1k$ here in the classifieds has REALLY got me thinking of getting my hands on one.
However, anybody know the difference between the later versions with a higher serial # vs the initial batches? Any flaws/updates on the later ones?
i did a search online and couldn't pull anything of notable interest, but the later versions seem to be commanding more.
hmm

Shooter of Film...
The F4 and the F5 were the same way concerning their Serial Numbers...the highest numbers had the most/all fixes or improvements...
It's possible the F6 with the higher numbers have the most updated improvements or they are more expensive only because they're newer...
I haven't looked into the F6 so I'm not sure if this is true with them but I do know that this is true with the other two (F4/F5)
It's hard to believe that Nikon would let the F6 out the door with any flaws that would need looking in to and fixing after the fact...

hmmm true on that i guess...
I'm just worried that there were major updates/improvements in the software, etc.. that were not really published.
thanks for the reply though

I don't think the F6 has been in production long enough for any incremental improvements to have been made.
BTW I just checked Fujiya's website. They have six used F6's in stock ranging from 84,000 yen to 96,600 yen. OMG when did prices come down to this level ???

Hi Jon...
ahaha... like you, I've been staring at Fujiya's website for over 2 weeks now, and the F6s have really dropped drastically.
I've also been dropping by the shop 2-3 times a week to have a more accurate update on the stock. But here's what's been troubling me.
The 88 and 84k yen F6s have been sitting on the shelves for well over 6 months now. According to the staff there, the older F6s are mostly "avoided" by the japanese shooters for reasons that he couldn't explain. hmm

Just found the link above. Lots of speculation on why s/n's above 28000 are better but no real substance to the claims. I'd rather save a few dollars and buy a cheaper body, especially since used cameras purchased at Fujiya come with six month warranty.

Ok reading further down the page I linked above, it seems that Nikon upgraded the F6 firmware early on. But even that's no big deal because you can get cameras installed with the older version upgraded at the Nikon Service Center for free.

Cameras from 0018754 left the factory installed with the new firmware.

How about that Thambar 90/2.2 for 315,000 yen currently at Fujiya?! (Sorry, talk about Fujiya always distracts me/gasses me as I get envious I don't live in Japan!)

I have wanted as F6 for a while but never saw it at a “reasonable” price as a second or third camera, behind my Leicas and Hasselblad. When I saw it hovering around $1K I snatched one up. All things even, I prefer a higher number cam just like my Leicas. Why buy a 4-5 yr old used cam, when I can get a less used newer one?
I have 85mm/1.4 Nikon mf permanently affixed to the F6. I had looked at the 85mm/1.4 AF as well as the 85mm/1.4 Zeiss , but I got a good deal on the Nikon -- problem solved. 35mm Summilux on the Leica; so I have basically a two camera, two lens avail light walk around kit. Sure, the F6 is larger/heavier than the Leica but it’s sealed and fast and as reliable as any electronic camera could ever be. Works for me.

cannot justify F6 for myself, as there is already F100. but every now and then I'm surely tempted
e.g. ability to store exif to memory card in a film camera. why wasnt this invented earlier ?!

Hi guys
I've the F6 and as I said already one million times, the only thing that I miss sometimes is a built-in flash.
i had both F80, F100 and F6.
F80 is great for landscape and static shots, plus the on demand grid and flash and it's really great to learn. AF is so-so (compared to others, of course) but metering is reliable. Click is what you expect.
F100 has way more performance, like a tuned car. I had it for a couple of weeks, and if I hadn't seen that F6 sold with MB40 in Milan, I'd have even kept it.
What really impressed me of that camera was the "violence" with which it focused with screw-driven lenses (namely, the 50 F/1.4) the noise of the motor looked like a gas down on a dragster, very exciting but not the best in silent environments. What I really liked was the shutter, like a silenced gun: NOT "Click click click" but "Thump thump thump". What I really felt odd with that camera was the way to open and load the roll, less immediate than the F80 or the F6.
F6: think of it as a Maserati. Sporty, but stylish, in a smoking dress, the classic car to drive with gloves. If you don't like a Maserati, think of an Aston Martin. Viewfinder is a "wysiwyg" one, i got an L-type because I liked the possibility to be helped when focusing manually. Very fast in focusing, also on low light, it's much more silent in clicking and the noise look like a metallic lash. I just love it.
However, if you're on a budget, go for a F100, or a F80 if you need the portable flash

If flash needed Metz 58MZ i-ttl w adapter kicks butt, or off-camera flash!!
Thanks
Just picked up an ebay F6 serial number 25xxx for 1100.00 best film camera ever made. better than my MP!

The F6 is a defnite improvement on the F100 in many small but appreciable ways. The LCD lets you change settings without having to memorize all the CSM settings, ability to store non-CPU lens data a la D2 series, blazing fast film advance and rewind (with manual rewind if you wish it!). The only thing that the canons have is the eye tracking AF points.

My M5s need red dots!
The F6 ranks, for me, together with the Leica MP black paint. Excellent camera, a dream to have, but not quite necessary to me... as I have an F5 already.
As for any possible issues that the early copies may have... I think you can safely assume that if there were any, any copy you buy will have been repaired and fixed. Good luck and have fun shopping!

Well, I finally gave in and purchased an F6 today. It's a fairly early s/n but its in excellent condition and was only $900! Resistance was futile :bang:
