Fair price for used 50mm 1.4 pre-asph?

Hi Everyone,

I am in the market for an M-Mount 50mm 1.4 Summilux pre-ASPH. I understand there are different versions.

If i understand the basics, there are two main distinctions, first gen using the E43 filters and being in Chrome. The later gens in Black using the E46 filters...and the last generation having a slide-out lens hood as similar to the latest gen 50mm Summicron?

As for the fine differences, it's my understanding the latest versions of the 50mm 1.4 pre-ASPH had a reduced focusing distance to .7m?

Would appreciate any clarifications.

Also, what would be a fair price for the version Summilux pre-ASPH which has the slide-out lens hood?

the 46mm slide out hood focuses to .7m The 43mm detach hood focuses to 1m. Many people have stated that both lenses are the same formula. May be sample variation, but I have both and definitely find the newer lens to have a more modern look, definitely higher contrast.

I would think you could find a slide out hood version for around $1200 or so. I would gladly pay more though, its a fine fine lens. The 43mm version is a little less, I would guess $900 to be a fair price.

Other big difference between the two is the focus cam, the throw on the older lens is much longer. This is either good, for speed of focusing, or bad, for accuracy with less travel in the .7m version, all depends upon how you look at it. Ive never had any issue focusing the .7m and much prefer it for shooting people.

Much thanks WoolenMammoth! I have been contacted by a local seller who has a E46 sliding hood version in black. It has some cosmetic blemishes on the barrel but the optics look perfect from what i see in the photos he sent me. I will see if he can negotiate on price as it's a little more rough than what i was hoping to find, but if it works perfectly I am OK with the blemishes.

Wow, Igor's Camera Exchange is awesome!

They currently have chrome only 50mm summiluxes listed, but the prices are a good reference. If it doesn't work out with the local seller, I will consider one of those 🙂

There were a few version 2's that were chrome beginning with serial # 1844001.All black modelswith 43mm thread are version 2.

Sorry to recycle "internet wisdom", but I read the formula is the same but the coatings are much improved, and this makes a big difference in the appearance of the images. No personal experience etc etc

I can only comment on the two I have, the old one has a cla and the glass in totally clean and the negs look different, thats enough for me. I ultimately make the choice between the two based on ergonomics so Id have to admit the difference is really only there if you want to look for it, you know? But if you want to look you can tell them apart.

BP models are considered esthetically cream of the crop. They sell fast no matter what the price. I was fortunate to buy one here on RFF the other day. I already have the 50 Summilux ASPH -- decided to keep them both.

BTW my 1962 50mm Summilux is probably one of the most beautiful/ pleasing looking lenses I ever purchased.
