(Disclaimer: I'm not sure how this fits with "no copyrighted images posting" rule, but I'm taking the risk since album covers are used in various ways on the nets and photographer copyrights become kind of blurred. Otherwise fine to delete the thread).

Francis Wolff was famous for all the Blue Note covers he shot, but he was half owner of the label, and was never famous for his photography in any other setting. There are at least two great books of his Blue Note pictures of John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Art Blakey, Clifford Brown, and many, many others! Shot the pictures in the recording studio with Rollei, strobe and Tri-X. He took his pictures when the musicians were listening to playback. Great stuff. http://www.allaboutjazz.com/php/article.php?id=1373

Yeah, the thread title is a bit misleading. I cannot think of any album cover that has a famous photographer on it.
'Album covers by (famous) photographers' is a bit of a tricky one aswell, though, as most album covers are photos and usually it's either the case that a photographer is commissioned for them or they are taken from an archive. The question then really is what kind of fame we're talking about here. I'm sure David LaChapelle did a lot of album covers but that's not really what we care about, right?
So I guess the question is more about famous non-commercial photographer's whose photos were used on an album cover even though they weren't intended as such
How about Sugimoto's seascape on that U2 cover?

That website is missing one, though: http://www.ntimm.ca/_/sumner-meet-spoon/
On posting images "inline": the RFF TOS states that you must be the copyright holder, or have permission.
If you took the picture of the album, and posted that image, should be fine. Posting a jpeg from a site that you do not own the copyright to, problem.
Confusing?
If only every book, picture, and album cover used the copyright permissions of the IBM Mark I programming manual. My book, my picture, on good grounds for copying it.
