Mr. bobYIL, between this and the digilloyd post, I swear you like to start fistfights on this site....![]()
Not at all... First the discussions on the Digilloyd post was rather a sort of cumulative response by insightful users to the comments of Mr. Chambers.
As for the discussions on AF for rangefinders, I think it was rather a neglected topic since the discontinuation of the Contax G series. After all we already have fine optical rangefinders but what could be the next step after them.
If there is a topic to be discussed widely then, frankly, I prefer to post it in the Rangefinder forum over any other forum, as the majority of the members here are able state their sincere opinion by leaving fanaticism aside.

So if I buy an M9 and set it to AE and use hyperfocal distance have I just made a really expensive P&S?

According to some RFF-ers, yes... but maybe you'd have to glue on a 35mm lens too.

If it is has AF it is not an RF camera: the AF mechanism replaces the RF mechanism
Unless you can disable the AF and focus manually using the double-image method. I can imagine some sort of high tech camera that included BOTH an optical RF and an independent AF system with motors, etc.
A rangefinder is a DEVICE. It is PART of a rangefinder camera. Or a gun, for that matter.

I believe that a rangefinder is something that finds distance nased upon triangulation. This could be done with AF also.

Contax AX anyone?
Contax AX anyone?
The AX was a good camera and had an interesting autofocus system where the film plane moved to achieve autofocus. I would love a full frame camera that would take my M mount lenses. It would not replace my M8 or future M10 (I took a pass on the M9 and am waiting for superior high ISO) but complement my system when I would need autofocus.
Now for an injection of sanity. The X100 would be great for right now as a spare body and when I would need autofocus.
The lens alone is worth the purchase price (as it was with my GSW 690).
The price is reasonable too (by Leica standards that is).
