father gifts

Hello... Advice please, thank you!

What's the best digital camera to buy that will give the 'manual' /film experience, and at a reasonable/reachable price? I'm trying to plan for a gift for that special someone (my dad who is a camera nut).. He uses a canon a-1 and once had a nikon fm2n (?is that right) and used to have the little leica cl which he loved very much indeed and which was a big feature of my childhood until it died, like one of the pets...

But now he doesn't develop pictures anymore himself so I thought a decent digital would be a nice retirement gift.

I tried to get him a digital slr last year but he looked a bit sniffy about it. He's a very particular man. So I guess the things I need to find are a really good viewfinder and the proper old fashioned layout of buttons and knobs as computer menu's are anathema to him. He doesn't like holding the camera out in front of him and refuses to use our little digital point and shoots.

Anyway, will stick my head in Jessops but thought I'd ask here...

What about the new GF1 with an optical viewfinder and the 20/1.7 lens? Or even the GH1? Or you just wait until the prices of M9 come down a bit 😉

If you can wait a bit longer, "E-P2" is rumored to be announced on 10/31. Again, it is just a rumor but it's supposed to be able to take EVF unlike the E-P1. It's much more "film camera" like compared with any Pannies I've held, and you can feel it when you hold it. Only one thing I wished was the EVF so I could use Leica mount and OM mount MF lenses at eye-level. I think your father will want that if he is like me: hates digital p&s shooting style.

thank you.. that's great coelacanth... that's very good advice and exactly his taste: he hates point and shoot cameras but only really likes small cameras.. will wait and see about the new camera announcement..
and matus, he's quite old and his children are quite poor, so waiting for m9 prices may be dangerous!
