i think i have stopped trying every camera and lens combo for awhile but i may be on to film/developer combos now.
just bought 20 rolls each of gekko 100 and agfa apx 400.
there is a good variety of popular developers available locally...kodak, ilford, agfa (rodinal) and sometimes some of the patterson ones too.
from what i've read the agfa is on the grainy side but sounds like it can be tamed with a dilute rodinal mix.
i'm still searching out info on the gekko.
for those who use either of these films...what's your favourite combo and please feel free to post pics.

thanks peter.
my plan with the agfa is to play around with it some. i have read it's very grainy and i used to like grainy alot. i may rate it lower or do my usual and underexpose my shots as i shoot.
the gekko needs more thought.

I got some rolls of Gekko 100 too. I saw a few places around the net that said it was the same as Maco UP 100 +. I just developed a couple rolls of it and it does indeed have UP 100+ written on the edge.
I eyeballed it and shot it at 200 in Diafine.

I have a roll of APX400 in the Zorki 3M now that I'm shooting at 400. I'll point you to the results when the time comes.back alley said:i have read it's very grainy and i used to like grainy alot.

In the next day or so I'll be processing some Gekko 100 in Rodinal. I'll add my notes to the fray.

My M5s need red dots!
I've got a 20-pack of Gekko stuff coming, and I'm planning on using my D-76/Kodak fixer combo with it (6 minutes). We'll see what turns up!

Hrm. You guys are tempting me to get some to try with Rodinal so I can report back with results.

APX 400 rated at 400
Developed in 1:100 Rodinal for 30 minutes.
Agitation for 30 seconds and then 2 tilts on the minute until done.
The night shot was Zorki 3M with FED 50/3.5, 1/50 at f/3.5
Day shot was Elmar 90/4, 1/500 at f/11

It does get grainy ... but then 400 with APX400 is pushing it. I think it works best at 200 to 320 (tops).
The only developer (at least in my experience) that really got the speed out of APX400 was Rodinal Special.

Yes, I'd say that for daylight shots the APX isn't suited to a lot of open sky or other light, even-toned objects/surfaces. I'm not anti-grain at all, but I'd prefer APX 100 for this type of shot. The night shot, OTOH, is quite nice. I agree with joe, the light swirl is wonderful.
I'd be tempted to try the 400 in a pyro or PMK.
Gene: You've been busy this week, it appears. Not much here or on Flickr, so I'm expecting an outburst of activity soon!

I'm afraid it's been a very busy week and no letup in sight for a day or three. I developed the Gekko 100, but in HC-110 not Rodinal. The negs looked pretty nice drying on the line, but I haven't had time to scan any of them yet to see how they turned out.Trius said:Gene: You've been busy this week, it appears. As a 400 speed film I'd rate APX pretty much a failure. Even Agfa suggests shooting it at 320 or less.
HP5, Tri-X and Neopan (or just about anything else) are better choices if you need 400.

well, it seems apx 400 is going to my 200 speed film for awhile.
i need to get some 400 delta and just keep it as my 400 speed film. that gekko film will be my 80 to 100 speed film.

Since I'm using Diafine for all my speed needs, I'm going to go with HP5 as an 800 speed film and Tri-X at 1250. Plus-X at 400 in Diafine will be my actual 400 speed film. Crazy, huh?
