New York February NYC Meetup

Hmmm... is this meet-up dead?

I missed the last Meet-Up because I have a class on Saturdays. A Sunday would be good for me. I would really hate to miss the next Meet-Up.

April 11th is the opening at MOMA I beleive.

I think its just New Yorkers being busy. This Meet-up is not going to die.

Barrett, thanks for safekeeping my slides. Arrived safely in the mail.

Cal, since your missed the last meeting, isn't it your turn to host this next one. Sunday's are good.

I guess that's one way I can assure myself that I won't miss the next Meet-Up. LOL.

If Damaso returns, I will respectfully defer the honors to him.

I have to check my calender, but tentitively it will be a Sunday after the 11th after the TCB opening at MOMA. Perhaps Sunday the 18th or Sunday the 25th. I say it is unwise for a herd of Leica nerds to converge upon MOMA on the opening. Much cooler later on the month.

Door Prize to the RFF member who travels the farthest is an unopened 100 feet of Ilford Pan F. I broke the antique (bakelite) bulk loader trying to figure out how to open it. Oh well. I will try to dig up more door prizes to aid in my quest to downsize.

I have to warn you guys and girls that I mean to create a big turn out. I figure we can meet-up at Lorely's and then converge on MOMA.

Gear heads: I expect to maybe have my new Rolleiflex 3.5F "Whiteface" back from Harry Fleenor's mid April. I bought this due to a GAS attack from the first Meet-Up where I met Andre. I kinda went crazy and turned over a lot of gear. Somehow bought a IIIG and a Canon/Seranar 28/3.5. Also a suprise is currently brewing...

Warning: expect a GAS attack because I seek revenge. Bring out your best/coolest gear for a defense.

Damaso is going to Senegal. He'll be back next week.

Last month I talked with Damaso about my Saturday conflicts and he said, "The next Meet-Up can be a Sunday."

Went to MOMA's web site. The hours are 10:30- 5:30 on Sundays. Tickets are $20.00 and can be bought in advance. HIGHLY RECOMENDED!!!

Last year's must see photoghraphy exhibit was Robert Franks at the MET. This year's show will be Henri Cartier Bresson at MOMA. The show hasn't even opened and the Sunday family tours are already sold out for the month of April.

From previous posts I know there are some RFF members coming from the Tri-State area and another from California to see the HCB show. Anyone from Europe? Asia? Give us a shout. Come to the New York Meet-Up.

I say we should wait a week for Damaso's return, but by next Thursday, if Damaso is not at the helm, I'll then firm up the date. Right now I favor April 25th because it allows more time for planning and lead-time. Seems like an noon-time gathering downtown makes sense before the show in mid-town.

I think I'm in for Sunday if we're really on.

Cal: did the slides get back to you safely?

(Edit: probably can't make MoMA after the meet-up...things to do, etc.)

I posted their safe return above, but I should have PMed you. Thanks again Barrett.

Hey, I just wanted to point out that we live in a great city, and there is another show that is at Lincoln Center that Damaso told me about, featuring the photography of W. Eugene Smith when he lived in a dilapitated loft in Chealsea. The Jazz Loft Project is another must see show that runs till May 22d.

Perhaps this could be for saved for the May Meet-Up.

Barrett, Thanks again.

I'm down with hitting a show or just going to a bar again. Either way, either day, I'm generally fine.

A week has elapsed so I say the next NYC Meet-Up will be Sunday April 25th. I'll be there early at 1:00.

I'm not sure if I'll also go to MOMA. Perhaps at the Meet-Up I'll make arangements to hook-up at a later date for the HCB show with RFF members.

I want to mention the W. Eugene Smith Jazz Loft Project at Lincoln Center. I saw the show. The hours are Tues, Wed, and Fri: 11-6; Mon, Thurs: 12-8; and Sat 10-6. The cost is free and definately worth seeing. The show closes May 22d.

I have to go back because I want to look/read through the catalog and get the smut of why a celabrated LIFE photographer quit his job, abandoned his family and became lost/inspired. I saw the show with my girlfriend so I was under a time constraint that prevented me from further research.

Another crazy story from the February Meet-Up. Carl got up and said, "Don't try this at home." Carl took a M-Body (I assume his own), put it on the floor, and then stood on it with the full weight of his body.

At the March Meet-Up I met Carl on the street as I was heading to class. Carl showed me this beautiful brassed out M2 wiith a winder. WOW. I showed Carl my new Leica IIIG, and I asked him, "Do you know what this lever is for near the rewind knob?" A diopter for the viewfinder," he said. Unfortunately, because of the engaging surroundings and all that goes on at NYC Meet-Ups, I tend to spend the time with people at my table. Perhaps extracuricular events will promote more circulation.

Save the date: April 25th for the next NYC Meet-Up.

cal, carl can do that because he weighs a lot less than I do. hoping to make the April 25 gathering.

LOL. I have to ask Carl. He seems to really know gear well. You might be surprised.

I hope you are going to make the next Meet-Up because you already have me making fun of myself, and hooked me into setting up this Meet-Up. The Meet-Up is April 25th, but you already have me laughing.

I'm running low on door prizes, but the person who travels the furthest to the Meet-Up will recieve an unopened box of a 100 feet of Ilford Pan F. The exporation date is old, but it has been stored in the frig for a few years.

Carl inspired me with his brassed out M. I will offer a trophy for the best/coolest/prettiest M-body Leica. The attendees of the April Meet-Up will vote and select the winner of the first annual Leica M-body beauty contest. (The real truth is that I want Carl to bring back that brassed out Leica so I can get some mojo.)

Perhaps because I am taking a class at FIT, I am becomming a Glamour Queen. I say bring in your M-body, be an exhibitioist, be a show off... Make any excuse to pimp out your Leica. Even if we don't make it to MOMA yet. Let's put on a show.

The prize is a 1997 issue of Fotographie International (Leica retro promo material) that has a special feature on the Leica M6. I was selfishly saving this issue for myself, and the other three issues were earlier door-prizes. Time to pimp out your M-body. Welcome to the first anual Leica M-body Beauty Pagent.

I just happened to find the four issues of Fotography International under the 59th Street Bridge in my wanderings BTW.

"Who has the coolest/prettiest M-body," I ask. Inquiring RF fans want to know.

I say let's start a thread with April NYC meet up in the title! Both the shows Cal mentions are fantastic
