I bought the FED 1 on evilbay from the owner who later told me he was a retired photographer. Clean as a whistle and well kept. I took a few test shots on Fujicolor 200 speed. I am very pleased with the results although they loose something between camera, scanner, laptop screen and the web.

Subject matter is irrelevant, these were test shot.
Thanks.

Wonderful looking camera. Just my 2 cts to follow. Looks like a head-on, high-contrast, full-sun shot. First, as a photographer, I'd slap on a neutral density filter. (Yah, sure, where'd I put that thing?). Second, I try to do very little scanner processing. I've got a pretty good scanner and software but they don't come close to matching what PS CS3 can pull out of images. In sum, there are highlights I'm sure can be recovered, even allowing for my overly-bright screen image.

you and that lens did a fantastic job.
the I -22 is as good as any Elmar, athough it looks like an I-10 with Fed markings.

I have never heard an I-10 mentioned before. A quick search found me on russianplaza.com where the reference reads:
"FED 1G or FED Zorki camera produced as a joint and last venture of the FED factory and the new Zorki camera company FED with FED Industar 10 (22) 50mm F3.5 coated lens (Elmar Collapsible type)

I learn somethin new on this forum all the time.
Thanks.

As far a scanning goes, I do not have, nor will I accept, a darkroom. The only way for me to get a decent print is to pay someone for it ( no even considered ) or scan and photoshop it. Since this is a hobby only, I print my own. They look good on paper after a tweak ot two in PS. These d**mn flat laptop screens don't help either.

Anyway, my original point, I am pleased with my FED 1.

Ive a Leica IIIC with hood and filters and I normally take a Zorki or Fed body and lens instead but use the leitz accessories, filters and hood. There is not that much difference, in handling or performance.

Congrats George! I think you're going to like it. Nice looking combo. My test rolls usually include a lot of comments from self that start with "What the...?!!"

The I-10 (Fed 3,5) can do amazing things. I had an enlargement (30cmx40cm) made at the local photo store, I was very satisfied by the result. I have two Fed1's, one with a coated lens, and the other without.

By the way, maybe this breaks the Ice in the Elmar/Fed/Industar discussion. The Fed is indeed an Elmar copy, and the Industar 22 a Tessar Like.
The pictures on the Left show the Elmar and Above the I-10 (Fed) lens Design.
The pictures on the right show the I-22 and Above the I-22 Lens design.

all these lenses including the Elmar are of a Tessar design.
the FSU glass incl. the I -10 , have the aperture blades near the middle of the barrel like on the Zeiss Tessar.
Leitz placed the blades just under the front element.

You're right, I forgot to take a closer look at the images. The Tessar design is even older than the first Leica. I wonder why the Fed factory placed the Aperture before the rear element.

the Soviets were copying the Tessar on all counts.
that is the position of the aperture blades on the Zeiss product.

Zeiss was and still is the acme of lens design.
