I just received a Fed 1 this morning in fine shape. Everything seems to work well, including the rangefinder that seems right on at all distances. One problem, though.
The film rewind lever that you engage to disengage the main film and shutter wind knob is awfully tight and stiff. It disengages just fine, but you feel like you are going to tear off your finger nail doing it. I hate to return the camera because the seller has been so damn nice and has taken a lot of effort to get the camera just right for me, but I worry that the lever or the shaft will in time sheer off or break something. Has anyone had any experience with a tight disengagement lever. Has anyone had one break.

Never broken one here. Usually they are tight because of a lack of lubrication - easily sorted! Grease the sloping face and put a drop of oil on the pivots.

Yes, I looked through a repair junk box and came up with the cam you are talking about. I can definitely see that a good lube would fix it, but getting to the cam is a whole other situation. Taking the top off of a camera is not for the uninitiated. I am pretty much the uninitiated. The camera repair guy here has absolutely no interest in allowing a Russian camera across his counter.
