users recommend fedka, yuri, alex-photo, oleg others. i wouldn't mind paying a little extra for an in-country, well-examined example.
now then, which lens to start? industar 26, industar 61, jupiter 8? i want contrast and character, and ability to fit a vented hood ...

Contrast + character = Industar-61, IMHO.
But all the other options are excellent lenses. So why not get all three and choose afterwards?

What is it about the 2 (b)? Just wondering? When I bought mine which was about 3 years ago, I got mine from a U.S. seller on ebay. Paid $28.00 for it or close to that. The shutter started to stick @ 60th of sec. wihch I found is common on these cameras. Adjusted the spring tension & lube, been working perfect ever since. I guess if you don't mind paying more you can buy from Fedka. He being stateside shipping it to you wont take as long. I bought a J-3 from a seller in Russia, came in about 2 weeks. You will want a good J-12 also.
Cheers!

In the US, Fedka is easily the best bet. FrankS, may I say that the Jupiter 3 has both speed and character.

Agreed. Yummy Sonnars, both.

If you get a Jupiter-3 be prepared to dismantle it and adjust if for your camera. You will be lucky if you get one that is compatible with your camera without adjustment.
I would use the lens that was supplied with a Fed-2b-an Industar-26M with focussing lever, at least to start with.

The I-26m is a great lens. A weird thing about FSU 50mms; they seem to cost about the same with the native camera as they do by themselves. The I-26m comes with an almost free early Fed2. The I-61 comes with a Fed 3 attached. The best way to buy a J8 is attached to a Zorki, etc. A Fed2 with a J8 is harder to find, or you sort of end up paying twice.

I bought a Fed 5 which came with the Indistar 61LD with the lantham glass. The lens even has clickstops which I like!

Fanshaw is right. A J-3 will, in all likelihood, have to be adjusted. Mine was set right by Kim Coxon and now works brilliantly. The I-61 L/D is an under-rated lens. I had one for some time, and except for when I neeed speed it was excellent. I have no experience of the J-8, but I shall go by what FrankS says here (which is what many others have said elsewhere).

I bought my Jupiter-3 from fedka, and it's been perfect since the day it arrived. I've bought a lot from Yuri over the last few years, and everything arrived as described and worked as it should.
