Fed 2 CV tribute

Hi,
I started several projects in the spring/early summer but I had to shelve all camera work for several months due to other problems. I am now beginning to catch helped by the fact that I am bunged up with a cold and grounded till it goes,

Anyway, this one was inspired by the Bessa T/ Heliar combo. Can't afford one of those so here's the alternative. I will need to redo the top. This one came from a parts camera and I wanted to see how it went before I wrecked the proper one.

Cool! Myself, I'd use a darker blue paint and stick with silver or white lettering - but that's just subjective opinion and should probably be ignored.

Love the idea though.

I thought of a more navy blue colour but I thought it would be lost. I might try silver lettering though when I do the proper top. Got to finish the black one first.

Cute !!! Yep I think a darker blue can make it even more attractive.

Nice job! FWIW if you decide to change to a darker blue try silver [as already suggested] for the engraving first I think that contrast will tame the present blue. Anyway I look forward to the result of your next project.

Thanks for that. I did get some blue leather for it but having seen the R3A on Robert White's site, I tried both once the paint job was finished and thought the black looked better. 😉

Hi Kim, you made a nice job of fitting the leather. Just a new leather job can do a lot for a tired cam. Did you cut it to size yourself?

Certainly did, I have found a good source of skins from a tannery in Scotland. It costs about the same for a whole skins as getting one kit from Aki.

Looks good, Kim. what kind of paint is it? Is it a normal enamel paint? Did you spray it or brush it on?

Hi,
It's a high grade coach enamel. The top and bottom ( from a spares body) are sprayed and then baked. The body main parts are hand painted. Masking it all was too difficult. Not too sure how it will stand up to wear but the camera was in very tatty condition but appeared to work well. If all else fails, the original top can go back on.

Just picked up a rather tatty green FED2 of E**y and figure that a reskin and paint would be a nice project as the original green colour is so dark it looks nearly black

Hi and welcome to the forum,
You may find that it will look a lot better with a good clean. It looks as though you have one of the original factory colured finishes rather than one of the many repaints you see on "that" place. I would remove the top and base. Take the bottom plate off the back. The can now be cleaned up. Old old toothbrush and some cleansing cream such as Cif can work wonders. Any stubborn marks can normally be cleaned with a polish such as Flitz. Cleaning the body on Fed 2s is a little more difficult than the Zorki's. On the latter, it is fairly easy to remove the body casting whereas on the Fed 2's it is easier to do it in situ. The green coulor is usually a mid to dark green rather than almost black. Again a clean with the aid of an old toothbrush may work wonders.

If you do want to reskin it, Aki Asahi only does kits for the later Fed's with the self timers. I maybe able to help with some leather as I have several patterns lying around. Unfortunately, I am a bit short on the adhesive. I got mine from Jon Goodman. If you need any help, send me a PM. I am not that far down the road in Lincoln 😉

Kim, what is the procedure for removing the bottom plate from the camera back once the tripod socket has been removed? I've yet to figure out the disassembly of the locks for the camera back.

Thanks Kim, I,ve allready gone the toothbrush-cleaner route with out much improvement , Also theres a few bad rubs on the base and plenty of evidence of kitchen table repair 😡 (plier marks on the view finder bezels etc ) hence the decision to paint and recover after making good the obvious cosmetic damage ,But in all honesty I tend to buy cheap knowing that the camera is probably going to need work I just wish the postage was cheaper from the FSU 🙁

Hi Andrew, I will post a couple of oics when I get home in a couple of hours. It is easier than explaining. Do you need to to know the method for the Zorki as well. That one took me a couple of hours to work out!!
