Hi everyone.

Just ordered my first russian rf camera to accompany my bessa r2:

Hope it is a good choice.

Well I suppose it will arrive in a couple of weeks and I am trying to learn a bit until then.
So, a question that I can not find the answer to:
Do I need to set the shutter speed after advancing the film on this model or only on earlier models?

I am looking forward to taking photographs without a light meter again. Using my digital compact camera really got me confused for a while...

The FED 2 on the pictures has the "new" style shutter time selector so it should be safe to change shutter time also before winding. However, it is a good habit to always wind first - you next FSU camera might have a more sensitive mechanism... ;)

The best rule on Soviet camers is just to make it a habit of ALWAYS cocking the shutter before changing speeds. The vast majority require this and it's easier to do them all than try to sort out the few that don't require it.

has the "new" style shutter time selector

If someone such as myself was considering giving a FED 2 as a gift to a non-FSUer such as my lazy-good-for-nothing-hell-of-a-shot-brother who hasn't [and probably won't] discipline himself to the "Rule #1 of living on the Dark Side: wind-first-then-select", what markings/mutations can I look for that distinguish the "new" style from the "old" style?

The "new" style shutter speed selector is is easy to identify if the camera is photographed from above. Look at the top-view photo in the ad: the centre part of the selector wheel with the black dot is separate from the outer part which has the speeds marked. Setting the shutter speed is done by lifting the outer part and rotating it with respect to the inner/centre part. Both parts rotate together when the shutter is fired.

The "old" style selector is one solid part and the selected speed is indicated by the relation between the speed scale on the selector and a dot (or similar) on the camera body. The selector rotates when the shutter is fired so the scale and the dot only match each other when the shutter is tensioned.

I think that the "new" style selector was introduced somewhere around 1958, since there are FED 2's which have the new style selector and the old speed range (i.e. 1/25, 1/50, 1/100, 1/250, 1/500 instead of 1/30, 1/60, 1/125, 1/250, 1/500). I believe my FED 2 is from 1958 or 59 and it has the new selector and the old speeds.

My 1955 Zorki 2 has the two-piece dial and you can "allegedly" set the shutter speed anytime. but I have never tried it. I'm not that curious. If I was going to give a camera to an individual such as the one described above, I think it would be something other than FSU gear cuz somebody like that is likely to find another way to screw it up even if the shutter speeds are foolproof.

Oh, man! You hit the nail on the head there... so you two have met!! It's amazing you know my brother so well, and he will tell you you're exactly right. :D But nevertheless, it's like this. He likes guns, I like cameras. He's a rancher, who carries a Dark Side AK47 to check the cows and I'm a preacher who carries a Zorki on hospital visits. He once gave me Ruger 9mm stainless pistol. I go through a box of ammo about once every two years.... but it sits on the shelf and reminds me of my brother.

The FED 2 would serve about the same purpose for him, a momento rather than an every day shooter, to sit on the shelf and remind him of his doofus brother and go through a roll of film about once every year. So, for that purpose, he'd want FSU gear cuz I like FSUs.

Anyway, thanks for the infos and replies. Sorry to hijcack the thread talking about that dork. If I really loved him, I'd show it by giving him one of those gold-plated-lizard-wrapped Leica copies. It'd look good hanging in the John Deere!! ;)

Don't have a brother but I HAD a brother-in-law who would have pawned a gift Leica for a pack of cigarettes. Unfortunately, he didn't depart from the family until after he passed on some of his genes. :bang:
