boo hoo! :(

The shutter in my pretty FED 2 failed. One of the ribbons came unglued from the wind-on drum. It is an original shutter, about 50 years old.

Has this happened to one one else?

Does anyone know where I can get pre-made shutters (lath, cloth, ribbons) for the FED 2?

At least I still have my good FED 2 (bright VF/RF, Canon 7 mount), a zorki 1, and a FED 1 that are good shooters.

Fixing the FED 2 will go to the back of the queue. I have 2 x FED 1, and a FED 1S ahead of it.

Thanks,

Try searching through http://stores.ebay.com/alex-photo-goods. There's none listed at the moment, but you could probably ask the seller if he has complete curtain/lath/ribbon replacements.

If your curtain is still intact, the ribbons can be replaced with thin black cloth ribbon. But if your camera really has its original shutter, it may be good measure to replace all its blinds and ribbons completely. Its better to do a full replacement job when you get the camera apart, than doing this over and over when an original part breaks.

Thanks,

Oleg at OK Photocameras, www.okvintagecamera.com has 185 of them @ 5.50 USD ea. I think his mininum is 20 USD for free shipping. If the curtains are ok otherwise it is easier to just reglue the loose ribbon since the "crate" has to come out anyway. I use just plain old contact cement, the Soviets used some kind of varnish. Regards, Dave

Will the Zorki (all) and FED 1 curtains work in the FED2? I thought the FED2 and later were different than the FED1 and Zorkis.

Thanks,

Thanks,

The complete curtain/lath/strap sets should fit the FED-2. The curtain sizes and ribbon width (not too critical as long as it fits the pulleys on the drum side) are almost identical. The earlier cameras did exhibit some variations in blind widths- it could be up to 1.5- 2mm in some cases. If the blinds are too narrow, the shutter would be prone to light breaches. However, since the replacements are of a post-FED-2 design, their specifications should conform to your camera's requirements.

Jay

PS- If you opt to replace a part, it's best to replace everything. Even if the other ribbons/curtain are still good. Your shutter may operate erratically due to the difference in materials- old vs new would mean differences in shutter weight, flexibility, etc.

Hi, I bought from this seller. He was happy to pop a few sets in with a camera. I'm sure he would send several sets for the same postage. I used a curtain to replace one which had holes in it.

In my case both curtains were still fixed to their drums, so I made a little jig that set the position of the replacements in the same place. (I posted on this but can't find the thread yet) The position of the two curtains relative to each other is critical, far more important than the position of each on the drum. I will look for more info if it if use to you. It is a very worthwhile exercise, fairly easy and reveals a lot about the operation of these mechanisms.
