I just received a FED 2 in very good condition except that the shutter overlap of the two metal strips leaks light.

When the shutter is 'parked' after exposure one metal strip is still visible and not quite all the way across - it is here that a small amount of light leakage can be seen.

Can I fix this myself or do I need an experinced technician. If a technician is needed who would you recommend. I live in Australia.

Cheers

Picture will help to determine the problem.
With my limited English it seems to be broken, unglued curtain stripe.

Google Maizenberg Camera Repairs book in English, to read and determine if you could fix it by yourself.

In principle, it is similar to earlier Leica LTM models for shutter and its gears.

Thanks Ko.Fe.

It would seem to be the curtain strap but I'm not keen on attempting the repair myself.

I have found several technicians here in OZ that may be able to help.

Maizenberg Book

Maizenberg Book

I just bought a copy of Maizenberg's book off eBay.
In English, hard cover, first edition and signed - it was via "make an offer" so I offerred half the asking price and got it for US$50. A lot of info for the money. Too much money or cheap, does not matter really as long as I have this information.

Now to start the learning process on Russian camera repairs. Wish me luck. I have been doing simple repairs for over 40 years but this book will take me to a whole new level and hopefully not one of pain.

Cheers

Try to ascertain if the metal laths are just a bit bent: if so, it might help to straighten them and this might cure you light leak.
It is quite normal that if a shutter is closed, that you can see some of the methal lath of the second shutter curtain; als long as it overlaps the first curtain there should be no problem.
Btw the Fed 2 is very nice but a little harder to repair than the zorki's since it has a different construction of the shuttercrate (but you'll only notice that if you take the camera fully apart when you would want to replace the curtains.

Thanks Ron.
Good information. If it ever comes down to a full curtain replacement I think I will hand it over to my technician.

Cheers
