Fed 2 test roll

I got my pics back from the test roll that I put through my newly acquired FED -2d. There seems to be a washed out area about 1cm across in the middle of all of them. Some prints are more obvious than others. I looked at the shutter for holes with a flash light and a dark room and didnt see any. I am at a loss. Anyone?

I can't remember if you previously told us where you got your Fed. I am in the same boat as you and am currently putting a roll of film through mine and will be intersted to see the results next week!

Sounds like you have a shutter curtain problem which is only a guess as my knowledge is limited. I decided to get mine from Oleg because I didn't want to go through the anguish that you're suffering.

I'm sure someone will know exactly what the problem is though!

5nap5hot, I've had light leaks on *almost* every FSU camera I've gotten. It sort of goes with the territory. First thing to do is run thin embroidery yarn around the seams of the back (where the removeable part joins to it). The second thing is to use a case if you have one. Third problem I've run into -- a gap between the shutter curtains, enough to let light in as I'm winding on. I wind in stages, and the first twist positions the shutter curtain gap over the middle of the film. If there's too much separation and no lens cap, you can get a vertical band of light. My curtains have metal edgings. I wiggled them forwards and backwards together, to encourage them to get closer. Of course putting the lens cap on between each film advance works too. Took me a long time to chase this one down. Actually it was a Zorki but the mechanism is almost the same.

Please post photos, and please treat shutter curtain (while in situ) like butterflys wing.

As you cock the shutter the gap/overlap between the 1st and second blind wont be necessarily be constant it may close slightly, can you see light through this gap. the shape of this light pattern will tend to be large and linear. Difficult to bodge this...

The cloth material needs examining carefully on both blinds from both sides as you wind on, as if the rubber matrix filler is badly damaged the fabric can leak. Torch in darkened room as the smallest pin hole can be a problem, the shape of leak light pattern will normally be small and well defined. Easy to bodge this...

If your camera does not have a send back warranty you will have to be patient as Michael alludes to...

Black multi ply wool may be easier to employ in seal areas, more compliant, you need small dabs of childrens glue to secure, in situ, dropped from pin.needle head.

Have a look at the negs. If the banding goes right the way across, it is a body leak problem. Difficult to tell without seeing a scan but my best guess would be the self timer. Tape up all the joins and over the self timer. If you have no leaks you know it is the body. If the leaks ar only on the exposed area of the film, then look to the curtains.

Forgotten you had used colour. With colour you should be able to tell from the colour either if the light leaked on to the front or back of the film, (or you can do with chrome, more easily).

If the colour is the same as the normal exposure then it is from the front and it could be through shutter or into take up spool area (with reverse wind).

If the colour is different it may be through back of film and is probably sealing at back of camera, etc.

If the rebates are also fogged then it is proobably not through the shutter...

Well ... I have done some more looking at the camera. The leak seems to be coming from where the 2 metal bits of the shutter curtain overlap each other. The leak is a line between the two that can be seen when cocking the shutter. I looked quite closely and it isn't coming from where the fabric joins the metal.

What can be done about this?
