Greetings comrades
Just got a new FED 2c and very nice it is too. It's skin appears to be nylon/cloth, rather than bonded vulcanite. It's bubbled up on the front of the body and feels quite loose like it could be peeled (as with the Zorki 4 and 4k). I am surprised by this but it makes me quite keen to stick one of Aki's new skins on it. Has anyone come across a FED 2 with cloth skin or am I dreaming?
Thanks

Usually the fabric skin is found on one of the later models. It is typically a ribbed fabric. While not very attractive, it affords a good grip. Much easier to remove than vulcanite.

Thanks Paul - that's reassuring. It's not ribbed like the Zoki though - it's got a fake leather pattern. Does feel as though it will come off though.

Try some Pliobond. I think it's sold in the UK.

Thanks Bob - we can get it from the German Microtools. It's not hanging off or even visible - you only know when you are holding the camera. It's like bubbled wall paper. I may do nothing!

I didn't know that any FED 2s had fabric covering! I can now go to bed confident in the knowledge that I no longer know nuffin!

hey, they're only Zorkis
I know nuffin' too! Especially about FEDs... but don't know that I've heard of a fabric cover like that on anything FSU. Possibly it's a re-cover applied at some point in the past with not-so-great glue. At any rate, even if you decide to replace it at some point, if it will come off easily and intact, it will make a great pattern for whatever material you decide to put back on.

Thanks all, as ever and Ian and Reagan especially (you two show up wherever I go). I was quite surprised by the definite feel of fabric cover too. I sort of have this thought that it may have been on there 50 years and it's OK - should I strip it? My wife's view is that it will outlive me so I should leave it alone. I had no such qualms with my 2 Zorki 4k and they look great in an Aki skin. I have a half dead FED 2 on the way (thanks Tom) and I may want to learn surgery and skin grafting on it first. Wouldn't it be great if you went to the doctor and he said that? I have this half dead patient and I am going to learn on him first ...
