Fed-3: Photographs coming out with lighter centre

I bought a Fed-3 recently from eBay.

Ran a role of film through it but in the centre of the photograph there is a circle about 2cm in diameter which is much lighter than the rest of the image. It's obvious.

What could this be?

Look through your lens. Is it clean? Does it have any marks near its center? I had an industar lens with cleaning marks at the center of its front element. All photos were coming out softer and brighter near its center.

Consider the possibility of a light leak. The central part of the curtain may be thinner than it should, and let some light in. Or even a small pinhole in the center of the frame area. Both cases can be improved by a layer of black fabric paint (the kind used for painting clothes). Replacing the curtains would be a more definitive approach..

It's got dull marks on the front glass of the lens. It's quiet large actually.

Looks like its been rubbed for too long.

Is the lens a gonner?

I've not actually checked the negative.

Yeap! Unless you can smooth out the rubbing on the front element you cannot say that lens is at its best. These marks diffuse the light giving the impression of a soft over-exposed spot.
