Hello all
After a long holiday from FSU cameras and prompted mainly by the purchase of a Sony alpha 5000 and a Lumix G1 I have started examining all my cameras with a view to possibly returning some to full usability, after all film may be dying but is not quite dead, I found a very nice looking Fed 3 in my stock, serial 8445570, which I suppose means that it was made in 1984, which is quite a long time ago but seems a bit late to me for a Fed 3. Anyway, the shutter cocks all right but t doesn't fire immediately or at least not always. Also it looks to me as though the curtains sometimes end up with the join inside the frame. I presume this means that I either need to sell it for parts or bite the bullet and take it apart to see if I can fix it. I gather the works are quite Zorki like and I have the Maizenberg book in Russian and a downloaded translation but I think ending up with a kit of parts is quite a likely scenario. Suggestions?

I was never able to put FED 3 back in fully working order. Slow speed thing is clapping the shutter.

Hi,
The first two digits of the serial number being the year is not true for FEDs but is a KMZ thing; meaning Zenit and Zorki.
The serial number of yours suggests 1972 to me.
I'll wish you luck with the repair.
Regards, David

Thanks. I suspected the serial numbers didn't follow the KMZ pattern. Presumably there is information somewhere.

Hi,
There's a lot of info about them all over the internet; here's a clue to the date of your one:-

The second photograph might be of interest.

Thanks, Yes that seems to be the model I have. I have two others as well, including one with Olympic logo. They both seem to be OK and I am about to shoot a roll of film divided between them and perhaps with a few from this one if, as I think, I have found a partial solution. The speed dial seems to be loose and tends to pop up. A tiny screwdriver is needed and I think I have one. A visit to Charlies, a local store that has almost everything will do the trick I expect, if I haven't got the right size.

More complicated than I thought. Connection between advance and speed dial. Something sticking. May have to disassemble.
