FED-NKVD or what?

Quite an early one, looks like a proper NKVD to me, 1937 ish. Do you think there's something not genuine about it?

nothing 'off' with it, looks real nice!

have a look at ussrphoto.com for all the specifics, they have extensive listings for all models FED-1 (and lots more too)

Yep, it looks good to me too. Are you saying that it was a later model underneath the top cover?

I bought a Zorki 3M from the same seller about a month ago and it was spot on, in great cosmetic and functioning condition:

I almost bought a late Fed-1 instead - the seller still has it (serial 666519) - and I think I still might if it's still there in a week or so.

Anyway, your Fed looks good, enjoy it along with the other from Oleg

I have been checking on sovietcams.com and ussrphoto.com, and do believe the body does not match the top.

The centre screw on the front is out from behind the lens, three screws are not under the rewind knob, there is knurling around the base of the shutter button, a 5mm base plate pin, and top of my shutter button is smooth, which all seem to be signs that it is later than expected on a #44912.

Hmm, I see what you mean.
There is an NKVD on eBay at the moment with a s/n a bit earlier than yours; # 29299. It seems to be the same as yours in regard to at least 3 of the issues you mentioned above though so ?
It's here if you wanna take a look:

The serial number puts yours at 1937 but that's just at the crossover of some changes; some "old" and some "new" features might still not indicate a fake. It is possible an older top has been put on a slightly later body but I still see nothing that positively says so. It is, after all, an old camera and who knows what changes it's seen in its life!

Well, for what it's worth, I reckon that the body is a FED-1 (f) 1949-53, (PE0300 on the sovietcams.com site) with a NKVD top.

Not quite the pre-war FED I wanted, but at least now it is a rare model.

Thanks for your interest.

Yes the quick (easily noticeable in the listing photo) give away is the larger base pin - at the 44,xxx range it should be the smaller diameter pin
